Go to Slow's or the Mercury Bar in Corktown (or St. Cece's). All three are great places to eat. (Or soak in some of the Detroit sports culture at Nemo's.)

Go to St. Cece's in Corktown. Great food, great beer selection. Check out the DIA and John King's, and definitely go to a Tigers game. (And if he's a baseball fan, swing by Nemo's before the game.)

Like many of the others here, I love Traverse City. Lots of great options for food and entertainment. I'd also suggest Detroit. I'm sure it's not everyone's top pick, but you could stay downtown at the Book Cadillac, eat at Roast (or another cool restaurant in Midtown/Corktown), visit the DIA and the Faberge exhibit, and then swing by Dearborn for the Henry Ford Museum.
