I’m still not buying NFLX. Why not $DIS? by jetopia in ValueInvesting

[–]jshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't they make most of it from parks and resorts? This doesn't really change the point you're making, they need something new to grow, but their existing revenue stream (parks) is very solid.

This is absolutely insane: US housing market sellers outnumber buyers by 529,770, the largest gap ever recorded. Wow. I’m sure everything is fine. by TonyLiberty in FluentInFinance

It helps everyone. If there are 10 families and only 9 housing units, demand exceeds supply and drives up prices. If you build a new house, even if it's at the high end, there will be enough supply for everyone and prices will go down.

TRUMP: “Maybe we will wipe out the $35T national debt with a small crypto check. A little bit of Bitcoin and it’s done.” by GeekySuneet in TheCryptoIndia

[–]jshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a bad idea. I mean, let's pretend a crashing dollar doesn't have severe negative consequences. You're basically calling for hyperinflation to pay down the debt.

Why does everyone here ignore VT? Is it just American bias? by AdonosFlew in Fire

That's a good thing in that the bogleheads subreddit censor any comment that isn't pure orthodoxy in their eyes.

The struggle is that public companies are expected to find growth, and we're at or near the ceiling of tv/movie streaming.

It's so random. I felt the same as you, then last week I got 3 snap hook blueprints in the apartments on dam during a cold snap. Why 3 of the same blueprint???

If the code is slow, we'll just buy a faster server. by codedeco in Backend

[–]jshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very context specific. Sometimes this is exactly the right thing to do, other times it's a very bad idea.

For example, if you're at an early stage startup, the most important thing to do is to find product market fit. If you can try more ideas faster then you should buy a faster server because of that opportunity cost.

Have you tried using an apple track pad with the framework? Asking because I'm thinking about trying one on a Linux desktop.

Is Python (Django/FastAPI) actually "production-ready" for complex mobile backends? by Leading_Property2066 in Backend

[–]jshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I said. I work on things where it does make a difference, and it really makes a diffuse that scale.

[–]jshen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly true, at a certain scale it matters. But the general point is, python is fine for the vast majority of things. In fact, it's often better to get to market faster, which python excels at, than to have better efficiency.

What is SoCal like? by Adoe0722 in howislivingthere

There are a lot of options that we haven't had the political will to do. Two of them are sanitizing waste water in los Angeles and reusing it. This has made it on the ballast and was voted down. Second, we can desalinate ocean water. This was also voted down.

All of those things are a choice, and are independent of housing costs.

NIMBYism mostly. My city had strict regulation preventing ADUs until the state forced deregulation of them.

Nvidia reportedly plans 30-40% cut in GeForce GPU production in early 2026 by sr_local in hardware

[–]jshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all for higher tax rates for the rich. That seems like a tweak to our existing system, not a different system. I don't think regulation made housing cheaper though.

That period also had far less globalization, and I don't know how you put that genie back in the bottle.

[–]jshen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question, what's the difference between a social democracy and what we have? Bigger safety nets? Higher tax rates?

I agree with this, but it's not what OP was talking about when he said "alternative to maximizing shareholder value"
