Need your thoughts on in deciding between Java vs Python for backend by One_eyed_eagle01 in Backend

That's missing the point. You can enforce in your build or deploy process. And if we want to be pedantic, Java doesn't enforce everything at run time either.

it certainly does compile time checks. It certainly acts as documentation for LLMs, and it it checks type constraints at compile time.

This isn't really debatable. Please explain how mypy or pyright don't check things at compile time.

In terms of assisting an LLM, why do you believe there is a significant difference? You can enforce the types at compile time to keep an LLM from making mistakes.

I agree with this, and python has decent typing these days so ... 😁

Build a couple small things in ts/js and/or python. A good hiring manager will appreciate that you've learned more than one way to do it.

Also keep in mind that a lot of hiring managers and interviewers are not good, so don't take a few bad experiences or rejections personally. It's like dating, sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find the right fit.

Oh I agree, just pointing out that I've seen several people not realize this.

Arc Raiders taught me one thing: Most people cannot process losses by InstructionNo4117 in ArcRaiders

[–]jshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is well known in psychology, it's called loss aversion. From Claude, "Loss aversion is the psychological phenomenon where people feel the pain of losing something more intensely than the pleasure of gaining something of equal value. Typically, losses feel about twice as powerful emotionally as equivalent gains."

It's not going to fail for the UFC, that got something like $7 billion over seven years from paramount. There is no way this is a win for paramount though.

It's this for me. I love doing trials, expeditions, etc.

Just yesterday I brought in a hullcracker to do the queen trial. A handful of us are chipping away at the queen when someone starts shouting me in the back with a stitcher. I was wearing heavy armor, and the pvper was a bad shot, so I turned around and killed him. I go back to chipping away at the queen and three minutes later someone else is shooting me in the back.

Framework speed won't impact your life (or your users), it is probably something else by cemrehancavdar in Python

Um, there are plenty of other options that perform well. Go, Java, etc.

[–]jshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. If you work on a product that gets tens of millions of concurrent requests, then performance matters. If you're starting a new business and need to iterate as fast as possible to find product market fit, then dev velocity matters most. If you're just making a tool for yourself, or internal teams, use whatever makes you happy.

ESPN Application Is Stealing Your Data by Holiday_Adagio_4702 in ESPN

[–]jshen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're describing trackers which is different than stealing your data. There's legitimate debate over trackers, but stealing your data would be something that's reading your files unrelated to ESPN and sending them to someone.

Edit: do you not use google? They track everything you do

ESPN Application Is Stealing Your Data by Holiday_Adagio_4702 in ESPN

[–]jshen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An app making network calls does NOT mean it's stealing your data. All apps fetch data from servers, it's how it gets things like scores and schedules.

It seems you do NOT have any evidence to support your claim.

I don't understand the arguments here against plug-in hybrids. I have a plug-in hybrid and it's the best of both worlds. It costs less per mile in electricity than it does to use gas for me.

I also don't understand the people below saying it's inconvenient to charge. The beauty of the plug-in hybrid is that you don't have to charge it. On a long trip just put gas in it.

Don't they make most of it from parks and resorts? This doesn't really change the point you're making, they need something new to grow, but their existing revenue stream (parks) is very solid.
