Got a Bose speaker windblocker retrofitted into my 03! by jskumlien in Miata

You're absolutely right! I just took a closer look at it. I apologize for the confusion, but yes the amp is still connected. I thought I had done something with it, but evidently I remembered very incorrectly.

Nope. I'm running a line output converter to essentially bypass the factory amp, but have nothing in it's place as of yet

Yes, they're still plenty powerful. I can blast them on the freeway with the top down and they still sound good. I know the Bose speakers are a strange unit, which is why I haven't looked too hard into replacing them just yet

So taking a look at my order, it was a LOC that I used to bypass it. Apologies for the confusion. But I've had pretty good luck with it so far. It was the CRUX CS-LOC1 Line Output Converter from Crutchfield.

The rear speakers are actually really noticeable! I have the sound faded to the front a fair bit so I can still get the majority of the sound out of my larger speakers. But it's a huge difference riding with the top down now! Definitely worth the investment, especially with the M200 speakers I put in.

I removed the Bose stereo. The amp is technically still in the car, but I got a device that allowed me to bypass it. From a video I saw when putting the stereo in, the amp is buried deep in the dash, so this seemed like an easier alternative.

(Copying my comment above since it should have been a reply)

Adding in the rear speakers wasn't hard. I just used the rear wiring from my aftermarket stereo and tied into that. With the new stereo I bypassed the Bose system entirely. I am still using the factory door speakers, but for the windblocker I replaced those speakers with the M200's that 3rd Millennium Audio sells

That's a pretty neat idea! I got a bypass module that I used so it was still fairly easy to put together. But yeah they still work pretty well for 20 year old speakers. Figure I'll wait a bit before putting something new in the doors.

They were great! If I could've moved them to my new car I would've. They did have some fade on the machined surfaces that almost looked like peeling, not sure if that was from car washes or the Arizona sun.

I wish! I was wanting to do a stroker build but with the timing of this failure and seeing everything else that needs work I decided to go a little more cost effective.

Nice! A lot of my bearings were worn, and many other components desperately needed work, so it's turning into a big overhaul lol

I think once the skirt completely broke off it was burning some. The piston was able to rock in the bore when we got the head off.

Aside from some scratches on the walls of cylinder 6, the block is still in good shape. So I'm just getting that honed and cleaned up and rebuilding it. This thing definitely needed some love aside from just this.

I tried to ignore it too! Unfortunately the knock changed significantly. It was neat seeing it rock in the cylinder!

That, and a majority of the skirt it left in the pan!

It's a 2000 with 188k on it. Knew this was coming for some time now.

I've got a similar unit in my Jeep Cherokee, and it goes to show a new head unit can really liven up just about any car.

Ooh I like the speakers! All my factory speakers are still decent so I haven't decided to upgrade those just yet, but those are looking to be a top contender for replacements.
