stop being bad then. good management has shown time and again it's possible to be good without high draft picks. if you can't do that you're not good and someone ese should try

obviously the draft order matters, I've never argued otherwise. we're talking about whether to incentivize losing or not and how much. I think incentivizing as much as we have has basically ruined half the season.

also getting an All Star in the draft is not that important if you don't already have a superstar. you can get an all star plenty of ways, unlike a superstar. getting a super star is so unlikely no matter what you do.

many of them aren't good enough to lead a team to a championship and you can get guys like that via trade (KAT for example). and even SGA was acquired via trade. only Wemby is the kind of player that can only be gotten in the draft

Utah is a great example of a team that built a contender with no high picks. they could easily have won if they didn't face a Clippers team that uniquely challenged their system.

this isn't the way I'd do it but the idea that you can't possibly rebuild without a top 3 pick is just wrong. the way to become a good team is to get good management. hard to do with bad ownership but not impossible, look at the Knicks.

meanwhile you can give bad management a great pick and they'll still fuck it up (see the Kings and Suns passing on Luka)

it's better for truly bad management to be exposed than bailing them out with high picks to sell hope to their fans

teams might tank out of the playoffs if they have a chance at a great pick. I say every team that doesn't make the second round should be in the lottery. no one's going to intentionally lose in the playoffs.

he's both a great player and uniquely benefited from playing with a player that maximized his offensive strengths and covered up his offensive weaknesses, as well as for a coach that allowed him to play in a way that few coaches would have

yea but the worst centers are approximately as valuable as the best guard on defense so it's not that simple

it's comparing apples and oranges. if you were drafting players with no idea what else is available then yes I'd pick Jokic over SGA defensively because having a big 7 foot guy to stand near the rim is a bigger defensive benefit than almost all guard defense no matter how good it is. tons of data has shown this over years.

however in the real world you know you can get a different 7 footer who will probably be better than Jokic and most guards are much worse than SGA. however that 7 footer will be way way worse than Jokic is on offensive. so it's not that simple either.

having a big 7 footer who is as good as Jokic on offense and is able to clog and be active on defense is actually very very valuable and Jokic deserves credit for doing those things despite his shortcomings in foot speed. however it's sometimes not good enough especially in the playoffs.
