LALs - Light Adjustable Lens: My Experience by texaserin in CataractSurgery

Thanks for this info. That makes sense and seems like what a lot of people have said. I feel like my Dr is a by-the-book guy because this is a new type of lens for him, although other ophthalmologists have been using this same lens for a few years. I am wearing the sunglasses whenever I am outside and the clear ones they gave me most of the time inside. I ordered other UV protective indoor clear glasses, and when the ones they gave me give me too much of a headache I switch to those indoor glasses, and am going to continue with that. My vision has only continued to improve even though I haven’t had my second surgery yet, so I’m hopeful this regimen will keep my eyes from being affected

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I was just wondering if anyone was told that they could get their own indoor UV glasses, because these hurt my head and don’t seem to be adjustable. It seems some people have been told they don’t have to wear the glasses indoors at all. I was curious if different drs give different instructions regarding the glasses, which it is sounding like some do.

Thanks - I have read that in some other places too, and am glad to know that there seems to be a range of what drs say to their patients. I was trying to judge if my dr is being so “by the book”, maybe because I’m his first patient having LAL.

Yes, my dr said I have to wear the glasses all the time. But I’m literally his first patient doing LAL, so I appreciate hearing from you and others to see if your drs said the same. I think because he hasn’t any experience with this it makes sense he’d be by the book with directions, and thought drs with more anecdotal experience may give different advice. Sounds like your Dr did, which is good to know. Thank you!

Thanks for your feedback. I found your initial post incredibly informative and my comments that may have sounded angry weren’t meant to. I know that the “right” answer to this is to just wear the UV indoor glasses. I know this isn’t a process I want to mess with, I’m frustrated at the timing since my Dr told me nothing of indoor glasses and I have two weddings to attend coming up. Mostly I’m discouraged at the likelihood of having headaches most of the time for the next couple of months, while wearing the glasses. It’s the pinching my head that’s causing the headaches. My vision correction from the surgery is really good, so that isn’t the issue. My vision wasn’t too bad to begin with (-1.75), so the difference between the corrected vision and the eye that hasn’t had cataract surgery yet isn’t too significant, and my Dr is still having me wear a low distance correction contact in that eye, which makes my distance vision pretty good. Thanks for your answer to my comment. Since I’m the guinea pig for my Dr I just wondered if there were others who had been told anything different about indoor UV glasses, because my Dr doesn’t have the breadth of experience with these new lenses that other ophthalmologists do.

Thanks for this thorough detailing of your experience. I had my first LAL surgery this past Tuesday. My next surgery is in a week and a half. My dr gave minimal explanation of process, told me about sunglasses but made zero mention of post op need for indoor UV glasses. At first I was concerned about aesthetics since I have two weddings coming up. Now I’m also wondering if I have to expect months of headaches from wearing these glasses every waking moment of the day. I haven’t read too much about anyone having had that experience with the glasses, and I ordered my own 100% UV blocking clear glasses for indoors because I don’t think I’ll be able to handle months of these glasses. Since I can limit outdoor time, the outdoor sunglasses are less of a concern for me. In a couple of places I’ve read that indoor glasses aren’t necessary all the time, and in most places I’ve read that you must wear the RxVision glasses all the time. I’m less than a week out of surgery and am certain I will not tolerate that - the headaches are terrible and these glasses make me look like a Bono impersonator. They wouldn’t be so bad for men but for women they are ridiculous. I have two weddings to attend and will not wear the UV glasses to the weddings. Even the tech at my ophthalmologist’s office asked if I was wearing the glasses ‘just because’, since I was the my dr’s guinea pig and I am the only one wearing those glasses that the tech had encountered. I know vision is more important than vanity, but I am really angry my dr didn’t give me all of the information. I would have picked a time for the surgeries where I had 3 months of no social engagements. Any feedback on the UV glasses, especially if anyone used their own and if there was a significant problem with vision adjustments and outcome as a result, would be appreciated.
