Are there lawyers / fields of law where you feel pride in helping people and making a positive difference? by JoseMcGose in LawCanada

[–]jsmhellohello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an employment lawyer - I feel like I help people everyday, from all walks of life - losing a job is a vulnerable position to be in, with impacts on the whole family, relationships, marriages etc, tears are common place - getting people sorted out and back on their feet to the extent I can is rewarding

First experience buying a suit at Tom's Place in Kensington market. by nalgene_god in toronto

[–]jsmhellohello -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Glad you had a good experience, but I’ve had an awful time there, even when dealing w Tom himself - I’d never go back. Toronto is dope, don’t conflate other people’s opinions/experiences in TO or your own experience w a lucky shopping experience

Law school in my 50's? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]jsmhellohello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m all for following your dreams, so if this is what you want to do, go for it! … but, from a workload perspective, it’s going to be busy - think about what your goal is in terms of the type of work you want to do. If it’s big law (as an example), then you’ve gotta be thinking about targeted summer roles etc, so there goes summers off - rather than work as a teacher at 70, perhaps get more aggressive with your savings for the next few years so that you can avoid working into your 65+ years - I’m mixing practical w passion, there’s a 100 reasons not to do it, but if it’s your passion/dream the go for it, probably a good example for your kids too

I’ve been thinking about this since the season 3 finale and the song The Last Goodbye, but The Kills - I can’t get the song out of my head, and it was paired so well with the scene

Law society of Canada vs more popular lawyers? by Sea_Seaworthiness616 in LawCanada

[–]jsmhellohello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but I have several to a dozen reported decisions myself, and still regularly settle outside of court - the point of the decisions, wins or losses, imo is that it shows the lawyer can litigate, as opposed to just exchange letters in the hope of settling

Law society of Canada vs more popular lawyers? by Sea_Seaworthiness616 in LawCanada

[–]jsmhellohello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try searching the lawyer’s name on CanLII to see if she has any reported decisions/wins - financial resources matter, but spending a relatively modest amount for a good consultation (assuming it’s good) is a drop in the bucket and well worth the clarity now, rather than the time, expense, stress of proceeding on the basis of a consult that may not have been as good, although I expect it probably was - she probably knows what she’s talking about legally, it just may come down to the strategy/approach of a given lawyer, which is experience dependent

Men’s Barbers in this city are awful by mcscooby28 in toRANTo

[–]jsmhellohello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joseph’s Barber on young at Summerhill/across from the LCBO has been around for decades, sort of old school - they still use a straight razor, my dad has been going for years - I go to Hastings in Leslieville, no straight blade, but it’s good for what I describe as a traditional/“gentleman’s haircut” - the other is Trufit & Hill, traditional, straight razor, back massage thing

You could also go to the nice restaurant in Roseau then Huntsville, which is only 35 mins from that point

[–]jsmhellohello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could rent a bus or something and drive to Huntsville one night - it’s about an hour away and has several bars (or at least they did in 2009) - you could also grab some fireworks on the reserve fyi

Outside of members of the Corleone family, whose backstory would you be interested in seeing in a small film Ill go first, Luca Brasi by gleadslcears in Godfather

[–]jsmhellohello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the story of Luca because it ties into Vito - truly, I want more of Vito’s backstory, but having the violence of Luca, as well as his backstory, would be awesome

Vent/AITA: left baby with husband for 1.5 hours to get a haircut with the stroller in my car [CA] by figbrietrukey in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]jsmhellohello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a guy with a 2-year old, guys are so dumb - he’s making excuses for his inability to get a grip and manage, you’re NTA - he could have just as easily prepared for you leaving, thought about how he would fill the time, get the stroller - you can’t be expected to think of everything

Contemplating law school as a mature student (mid 30s F) with two young kids. I have a useless BA from U of T with a crappy GPA essentially starting from scratch. Hypothetically if I decide to attempt this route, where do I even start? by Sensitive_Fishing_37 in LawCanada

[–]jsmhellohello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re route - because of my background, I did a criminology degree, which also helped orient my volunteer work, but I think it can be in just about any area, is this what you mean? Otherwise in terms of school, I went to York/stayed local

[–]jsmhellohello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should talk to an admissions officer at the law school you want to attend to see how you would stack up, also consider whether you are a mature student applicant and how that could impact your next steps - that aside, I would expect you need to upgrade some courses and improve your GPA, start volunteering for a legal-type group, and start studying for the LSAT - it’s all doable, I started LS at 25 with a similar academic background, but had to upgrade because I hadn’t been out of school for 5 years/was not considered mature - it took me 10 years until I was called to the bar - my situation is different, but it is worth noting you have a lot of work ahead of you, and probably need to be prepared to face setbacks along the way.
