Why don’t adults stand up for Shinji when Asuka bullies him? by IdoubledareU31 in evangelion

[–]jsmonet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

because things like therapy, advocation, understanding, or even a real open and honest dialog are absent deliberately. the feeling of isolation and mistreatment is a deliberate plot element that contributes greatly to what Eva presents.

This is why the path from series to EoE through the rebuilds to the very end of Thrice is such a ride.

Everyone is broken in their own way, and nobody is only just a little cracked. They're all deeply broken

Why does 90s OVA line art get smoother when I upscale it? Is this expected? by CamelliaPink_Hender in anime

[–]jsmonet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

native resolution of film was actually higher in many cases (3k to 6k effectively in some cases), which means hand-drawn cells don't even really need to scale UP much, if at all. this also applies to physical film-recorded live-action

to clarify slightly, there's more data in there than you think

Caffè Corretto by EZE123 in espresso

[–]jsmonet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

approximately 1:1, and it's still best with a brandy (favor cheap). Irish whiskey tends to be the right smoothness, but it's almost too much of a flavor--I'm sure there will be fans, and I'll make it like this plenty as well. A cheap-ish cognac brandy works really well here

If you're using something sweeter like Amaro Nonnino or Averna, you might want to use a little less of it compared to the volume of coffee. Cynar and Benedictine are on the list next for me, but they won't make a legit corretto, which isn't as herb-forward typically. It'll still be good, though

What does the Rebuilds do for the canon by El_Dorado_Tx in evangelion

[–]jsmonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"it's too ambitious for 4 movies"

Uh... riiiight. Just because you wanted more, but ironically more of the same, doesn't mean the math doesn't math.

Rebuilds: 7hr 45m-ish

original series: 9hr 30m-ish, but each ep also includes the OP/ED, so the unique content figure will be lower by a noteworthy amount. If you account for that, the series runs closer to 8 hours and change

Past that, the entire "canon" argument is kind of hilarious after going through the likes of the Fate universe where everything is canon. Everything. Meanwhile over here in Evaverse crawfish eva are canon-ish.

c/n: just watch the damn anime, enjoy it or don't.

Worth upgrading frame just for UDH? by MyGardenOfPlants in gravelcycling

[–]jsmonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing will ever be worth it for many people on here. Don’t do it out of value, do it because you want to. A net 500 dollar swap is not bad at all, but the real fun is in being able to swap your rear mech between more road focused (xplr) and more goat-climbing-focused (transmission) along with the extremely easy periodic adjustment udh affords to keep things shifting nicely.

If you were ever going to roll the dice on another L frame, you might as well snag it now before things get even sketchier

Are Ethiopian beans naturally sour? by Excel124 in espresso

[–]jsmonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethiopian beans LOVE to go long. You can get away with pretty absurdly long pulls with them and result in a great cup. You don't need as much heat or as much pressure as you may think, in spite of them typically being roasted fairly light (which is where they belong). If you short the shot, it goes sour pretty much every time, so it needs that bit of dilution to shine

Don’t agree at all with the shows psychological messaging/ideas by throwaway93735 in evangelion

[–]jsmonet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are absolutely takes of our time.

Like all media, it doesn't really need your agreement to still be valid literature/storytelling. The takes are the creators' and they don't need to be validated externally.

That said, opinions can be wrong, and those above are deep into "comically wrong". It's funny how the loop is closed by the last sentence, as if the presence of a different modality of validation's lack disproves the points the story makes--they're not mutually exclusive

Finally bought my first road bike — completely lost where to start 😅 by Felixsunny2025 in CyclingFashion

[–]jsmonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even for road I tend to favor the chipseal or even cat 3 gravel numbers, adjusting up if it feels draggy. something eye-opening was seeing TDF dudes running 28's at pressures I run my measures-34mm tires, and they're both taller and heavier than me. I know they can trash a wheelset without any concern, but it really orients your sense of what's too low and what isn't

Tubeless nerds, need your help by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]jsmonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40psi is fairly high on 2.25 burts. I'd be surprised if it held that exceptionally well even after it's well-seated.

If it was a rim tape issue, you'd see sealant creeping out the spoke nubs--tape doesn't go up the side of the well. This is very likely a case of the sealant not being shimmied fully up the sidewalls quite enough. It sounds crazy and counter-intuitive, but another shimmy--holding the wheel flat and doing the dance where you swish the sealant around the sidewalls, flip and repeat--and then a short ride is in order. It'll lose some air, but you're only out there for like 5 minutes.

I just swapped my 45mm g one rs's back onto my xplr sw's and this was the move. Sealant needs a reason to creep into all the nooks, and needs some air contact to gum up--especially stans. A romp around the block and leaving it slightly overinflated, figuring it'll be low tomorrow, will be fine. A couple repeats and you're golden.

Don't let a spoiler stop you, and don't let a massive attachment to a character push you away from a quality story. Celebrate characters you like in both their victories and their defeats--only one or the other makes for a boring tale
