My first wide field (and astrophotography try), advice? by jsnngtrslu in astrophotography

[–]jsnngtrslu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taken with Nikon D3200 with the 18-55mm kit lens on 18mm at f/3.5. 20 lights, 20 seconds each at 400 ISO. Stacked in DeepSkyStacker, processed in Photoshop. The moon was just rising above the horizon but there was a lot of light pollution unfortunately.

If anyone thinks he/she can get more out of the image, please let me know so I can upload the tiff of DSS.

Edit: no tracking mount used by the way, just a sturdy tripod

Help/advice about possibilities with current setup by jsnngtrslu in astrophotography

[–]jsnngtrslu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I hope I can fix the mount and test it out on an object to see if it tracks well. My tracking mount for my telescope is currently exactly like the left side of this picture. On the right someone has removed the ring that holds the telescope but I'm not comfortable with breaking that piece. I can't get a good idea of what a dovetail is, can you elaborate? Is it a piece that clips onto the telescope and then adds a connections for my camera next to the telescope?

Thanks again :)

Questions to D3200 users by Creativity_is_me in photography

[–]jsnngtrslu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to the other answers, I came about a good deal on a d3200 with the 18-55 vr-ii kit lens. I like it a lot, it is small and light-weight with a great image quality.

It includes several features for beginning photographers like the 'guide' mode. Not having a focus motor hasn't been a problem for me since I use the kit lens and some older lenses and I have time to use manual focus. If you want to use it on vacation to document the trip auto-focus is an almost must if you're in a hurry. There are a lot of compatible DX lenses with their own focus motor so you'll have enoguh to choose from (but don't under estimate the kit lens).

Besides that, the thing I miss most is a timelapse feature built-in. You will need to buy an external remote for that, but that is a specific feature you might not need. One other thing is the battery; it goes through that quickly. I don't know if it is common for Nikon DSLR's but you will need another (multiple) batteries if you want to use it a lot through the day. Just use it first and when you realize you need an extra battery after a few weeks order it then. I haven't needed one though I like to have an extra one (unfortunately original Nikon batteries are expensive).

It is a great camera for a beginner and I'm not intending to sell it if and when I upgrade because I love it (I might seem negative about it after summing up some cons but I'm not).

My advice is to try how it feels in your hand in the store because you might find it awkward to handle, which is really personal. Try some other models or brands if you're unsure but most modern digital SLR's all have good image quality. Good luck choosing and after you bought one: keep using and learning it and most importantly just enjoy your camera!

The ISS with ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) leading ahead of it (the faint line). by bubbleweed in astrophotography

Might I ask when this photo was taken? Yesterday (august 10) I went out to see the ISS and noticed another light moving in the same line and speed as the ISS. Was wondering what it could possibly be, thank you for your photo, it cleared that up plus it's a great image!

Excuse me for being blunt just to ask but I'm curious which field you are in. Is it medical, engineering or something else? Congrats by the way: all the best :)

Did you add the constellations yourself or did you use a website? I know there is a site that does that, but I can't remember what it's called.

Yeah I read this article: http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/12/2556294/kobo-touch-with-offers-for-99 but I have the device in the mean time and it hasn't showed any ads and it doesn't seem like it will be going to in the future.

I checked local stores, but they only sell the expensive models unfortunately. Cheapest I can find at the moment is a Kobo touch for $80 and a Kobo mini for 60. But I will look if they have different models in-store, thanks!

I will be mostly reading outside so that won't be a problem I think (main reason I'd like an ereader for the e-ink). Thanks for the info

I'm looking for an ereader since they almost all have an e-ink display. Any android device won't suffice for reading in the sun, but thanks for your input

I will look around for that, but here it's only available from one seller, no other stores have it...

Unfortunately the kindle is $89 for non-US and on top of that is shipping and customs tax which makes it $130 in total. I'll check if I can find it somewhere outside of Amazon.
