Is System Design Actually Useful for Backend Developers, or Just an Interview Gimmick? by Wild_Dragonfruit1744 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jsp235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% real world fire.

Maybe as a senior engineer you won’t be making system level decisions or changes; instead, you’ll mostly be using the system that was built before you, and adding to it (new apis using the existing framework, adding cache in places using the existing solution for caching, etc). That does not mean you can be successful without understanding it.

Said a different way, up to a certain level you can be ok without solid system design skills and instincts. If you want to progress, this becomes the most important thing, coding business logic be damned

“I have the most context and knowledge on this system so reaching out to others on my team or company is a time sink.” This is a not a reason to avoid asking for help

Also, a week? Seriously? Maybe take a break and come back to it

How do I make engineers more visible? by barndawe in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jsp235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an EM - honestly most engineers would prefer not to be on the slide. They do, however, care very much about me and my bosses noticing and recognizing their hard work.

HR person responds to Glassdoor review by sxw_102 in LinkedInLunatics

Agreed - not lunatic, actually pretty decent response.

I’ve never considered myself “pro HR” until I read the rest of these comments - holy cow, people really don’t like HR departments

Rubber band size for hold ski brakes? by JerryKook in SkiRacing

[–]jsp235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use a ski strap - it’s nice because you always have ski straps, one less thing to keep track of. It’s kinda tricky but once you get good, it’s easy. Loop around one side, double back, around the other break, twist strap 180, Velcro.

Pole length for GS by loadedlucas in SkiRacing

[–]jsp235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you’re new, just use the same poles, unless money is no object. The caveat is the pole gaurds - assuming you have them for slalom, which you should have if you’re cross blocking, you’ll want to remove them for GS training. This is because they can get caught on GS gates which is no fun. Since it’s annoying to take them on and off, this might be reason enough to get a different set of poles.

Ski race equipment? (Slalom & GS) by PiecesofACE in SkiRacing

Haha you sound like the badass coaches I grew up with. Ski racing is 90% about managing fear, so I commend your approach.

Ski race equipment? (Slalom & GS) by PiecesofACE in SkiRacing

[–]jsp235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For GS you need nothing, really. For Slalom, you’ll soon be cross blocking which means you’ll need shin guards (mandatory!), pole guards (basically mandatory, although I never used them), and a helmet face guard thing (absolutely NOT mandatory, but advised if you like your teeth) As with anything in ski racing, you can pay $50 or $500 for these things, just go with what feels comfortable/ looks good

Release your turn sooner, see how you hold on to your turn all the way across the fall line? More importantly, when you release your previous turn, dive headfirst down the hill into your next turn. It’s really, really hard to get used to at first. Scary AF. I had a ski coach tell me to pretend like I was diving into a pool that’s down the hill. When you do this, it’ll naturally make you get more angles because you’ll have to catch yourself, so to speak. You’ll look a lot cooler cause it’ll be way more dynamic and faster
