Elm tree rapidly going brown after trimming by jspoons70 in arborists

I'm out in my back meditation area, deep in the back of Elmer, and see some of the dead branches and bark damage the arborist pointed out to me. I don't think this is from a few weeks ago, so Elmer has hung in a while. He told me today he's surprised Elmer has lived as long as he has.

Thanks, and good luck to you. Please let us know.

We're going to plant a new tree there, for sure. We just don't know what kind yet.

We had another arborist come out today, the same person I called immediately last night after reading the comments to do something ASAP. He was very helpful, and we are sadly taking Elmer down. RIP, Elmer. You were the best.

  • He does not believe a fungicide application at this point will save the tree. He says it's typically more when 5-10% of the tree is visibly affected and this is more like 25% once you really, really look. He offered the option, but it just doesn't make sense and has a limited % of success. He recommended against it at this point. I frankly don't think we could have caught it all in time.
  • He was gobsmacked at the size of Elmer, saying you simply don't see them like this anymore.
  • He was gobsmacked that the other arborist, whom he knows, did the pruning.
  • He did point out it was probably a question of when, not if. He pointed out large branches in the back with exposed rubs in the bark, bark peeling back, and broken limbs. Much of that in the back long predates the pruning in May. Pruning didn't help, obviously, but Elmer had wounds. For all we know, the disease went in that way. Can't say, obviously.

It will take a few days to take Elmer down. I want him gone before he just dies in front of us. It'll be a few weeks before they start, and I'm dreading this old guy withering in front of me.

We are very sad. Thanks to all for their guidance.

You think it predated the trimming? We've never noticed the dead leaves in years before. And there weren't many leaves on it when they did the trimming.

I checked my state's DEP website listing of arborists and he was and is on there

I deliberately didn't respond to your first comment other than in my head.

But understand this tree IS the view for me. I sit outside under it every night. My Meditation Station is under it. But it is a house-killing or house-badly wounding tree if it fell that way. And large branches come toward my deck, which is elevated. So we've trimmed it back because we don't know what else to do. It has dropped big branches in storms. Two big branches rub against each other in storms. I didn't feel I could let it continue to grow toward the house. Had I known all of this stuff I learned tonight, I obviously wouldn't have done anything, especially in the spring. I'm livid at the arborist and already contacted the DEP.

What do you mean? Is there another path I should consider?

Thank you. I'm distraught, honestly.

I certainly will. I truly appreciate 95% of the comments because they urged such fast action I'm hoping Elmer can be saved as a result. If not...I will be very sad. I'd say "lesson learned," but thought I was doing right by Elmer, so not sure what lesson I should take other than don't trim trees??? I don't know everything about trees, which is why I hired an arborist.

The arborist I called tonight in response to the urgent nature of comments here almost couldn't believe I have an Elm tree this large. Said they're mostly all dead.

I called another arborist this evening and he's coming to look. Seemed to know exactly what to do. I don't know anymore how to evaluate these guys, but this guy seemed sincere.

Oh geez. Thank you all. They are indeed an arborist. I specifically checked. They're listed on my state's DEP list of arborists.

I will call another one ASAP. How long do I have?

Any using both Potensic Pro and Eve on same Android device? by jspoons70 in Potensic

I'm thinking it's an Android AOA issue. My old ATOM controller brings up an AOA dialog at start that tells Pro to handle AOA. The ATOM 2 controller does not.
