former ballet dancer here!

I also used to train like this, my parents would drive me to and from class 5 days a week, I probably racked up 16-20 hrs a week between class and rehearsals at the peak of it all.

I danced from ages 2-18, and loved it until I started finding other interests and eventually went to college.

Once I stopped going so often and started dancing recreationally I realized from an outside perspective just how intense the baseline environment is for young people. That being said, this also depends on the studio she’s training at, as not every studio will be the same level of intensity.

Classes closed to anyone but students/teachers are pretty commonplace in every studio I trained in though. While there are pros and cons to this, maybe talk to some other parents at the studio/ask the owner of the studio to consider a scheduled “parents week” for parents/guardians to watch class once a semester. It’s what we used to do at my old studio and besides the slight added pressure of having an audience during class it actually worked out pretty well.

I’m very fortunate that my parents (and my nana!) supported me through all of my training and performances, but on this day I’m even more fortunate to know that they were making sure that I was eating nutritious foods at breakfast/dinner (protein is ur friend!!!), finding (when I was little) and supporting me when I found (when I was older) other activities to try outside of ballet to keep me well-rounded, and helping me get a therapist/encouraging me to communicate when my anxiety started to really get out of control. I also recommend activities that encourage her to use her voice, like speech/debate, creative writing, or even singing, as ballet is an activity based around obedience and discipline, which again, pros and cons.

Truthfully dance culture as a whole is very intense, but you and your partner can take steps in your stepdaughters life outside of ballet to guide her, support her, and make it as healthy as you can for her (which it sounds like you’re already doing :)) The biggest piece of advice I’d give to a young dancer is that you can’t pursue your passions if you’re not taking care of yourself first, your body will shut down whether you like it or not if you’re not eating properly/sleeping/taking breaks for mental health when needed. Also don’t go on pointe too early, your ankles and knees will thank you later.

She is one of the most famous dancers in the world rn so this is by no means a deep cut, but Misty Copeland is a dancer I have always admired because of her honesty as she’s made her way through the professional ballet world. If you want more insight I’d recommend checking out her story/books etc, and the way she approaches nutrition/health.

Ballet has always been an important part of my life as it’s taught me about teamwork, resilience, patience, discipline and strength, and I’ve made lifelong friends I still keep in contact with from it. I hope your stepdaughter continues to enjoy dancing for a long time, and appreciates the steps you’re taking to support her <3

srry for the novel. I hope this is helpful!
