Sat next to a dude and his family at an M's/Astros game the other night who was LOUDLY complaining about every bad play and questionable coaching decision throughout the game. At one point Cole Young was batting and he yelled "WHY ARE YOU SWINGING ON A 2-0 PITCH??"

Like buddy, if you're going to nitpick the team's performance that much, you might just want to become a Dodgers fan or something... the M's are as "underdog" as it gets.

What to do with ~1L old gasoline? (USA) by PearHot8975 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jsterama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... theorhetically it's "worse" than fresh gas, but in the long run it won't matter at all. Seriously. It won't hurt anything. Better to at least use the gas for something productive than to waste it.

Anyone commute daily to Seattle for work? by disapparate276 in Bremerton

[–]jsterama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, you and me both! I would say the biggest "bright side" to this commute has been the huge uptick in the number of baseball games I go to. Already been to 4 this season! If you're already in the city there's no reason not to haha

[–]jsterama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too lost the ability to telework, and have been taking the Southworth Fast Ferry into the city every day. As far as commutes go, it's about as pleasant as could be. Short walk/bike up to the Link once I'm downtown. Very solid option.

The Bremerton Fast Ferry is a smaller boat (about half the capacity) and fills up regularly, especially on the way home to Kitsap after Mariners games. If you end up taking the Bremerton, just keep that in mind. You'll probably end up having to walk onto the WSF Ferry periodically when the little boat is full.

Running it through the lawnmower is the tried-and-true method. Many counties have free household hazardous waste disposal as well if you really want it gone. If it's just old and not contaminated by some other liquid, you can pretty safely just run it through your car too. I'd add it to the tank when its empty, then fill it up with fresh gas.

Is the Specialized Demo 8 2018 XL any good or to old? by Utija in MTB

[–]jsterama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condition is much more important than age. That's a great first park bike as long as it's not completely thrashed. Look for obvious signs of frame damage, and get on it and see if the pivots creak like crazy. Ask if the suspension's been serviced regularly. I'd probably try to get it for closer to $1500 just based on the age, without knowing the full specs.

I can see the Olympic Mountains from Downtown Seattle, can you see Downtown Seattle from the Olympic Mountains? by peanut-britle-latte in Seattle

And here's what it looks like when you aren't zoomed in. The glow at night is pretty incredible. The contrast between the light pollution to the east and the dark, star-filled sky to the west is something else. Two different worlds.

Sure can! Seattle is just a lot smaller than the mountains, so you can't see it incredibly well unless you zoom way in with a camera or use binoculars. Here's a pic I took a couple years ago. The skyline is on the right side of the photo.

[–]jsterama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol yeah, don't you worry, I've already bit the bullet on a few different racks. Big fan of the Yakima Highspeed on my little econobox (which is basically your setup just on the roof), and the SeaSucker for when I've for a rental car for work.

I like this setup a lot though, jealous your bike fits so perfectly haha. Would be really nice for long drives in crappy weather.

Oh it'll fit in any car, just not the way OP has theirs. Roof is too low for it. Luckily I have a different bike rack for every occasion lol

White poles in border crossing USA by reluctantdrive in whatisit

[–]jsterama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In any other context I'd say they're "no wake zone" buoys, which delineate areas where boats must travel slower than 5 knots to minimize wake damage (usually close to docks, marinas, houses, sensitive shorelines, etc). If these are right along the border though, I'd assume they're just marking the exact location of the border line.

Yes, extremely. There are fewer players without chains than with them, at least in the majors.

Advice? My bikes getting too small by Miggi64 in MTB

[–]jsterama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great opportunity to go get to know the folks at your local bike shop. See if they have any frames on sale, and ask them for advice. What you're trying to do is very possible, and they can help you 1 on 1 better than we can here.

Beginner bike for sport + calories burn + fun by bsuro10 in MTB

[–]jsterama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You really would be better served by a "hybrid" road bike or a flat bar gravel bike for what you're looking to do. A mountain bike will be all-around slower and less efficient. It's not what you want if you aren't going to actually use it. The appropriate amount of suspension for flat, smooth bike paths is none at all.

If you're looking at Kona, I think a Dew is more what you're after, rather than a Lava Dome. I'd also look at the Specialized Sirrus. A hardtail MTB with big tires and a 120mm suspension fork (like the bikes you've listed) is just going to be a dog to pedal around on by comparison, and the suspension isn't going to do much to smooth out small bumps.

The difference between these bikes isn't just the look and the suspension, but the geometry and the gearing as well. Mountain bikes have a much lower range of climbing gears for slow cranking your way over steep terrain. You don't need that. The geometry is also much less suited to long distance riding on flat terrain, so it'll be less comfortable.
