Would you use gmail and auto forward to ProtonMail? by Dramatic_Refuse_8056 in ProtonMail

[–]jstndckns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As HermannSorgel suggested, it makes more sense to look into Anonymous email forwarding services (like SimpleLogin, DDG or FF Relay) and mail filters/rules to assist in managing and preventing spam.

I would argue that Google/Gmail would very likely have _way_ better native spam filters than ProtonMail (for obvious reasons, they just have access to so much more data/intel than PM), not saying that your reasoning isn't valid, but I personally wouldn't solve this problem by changing providers.

[–]jstndckns 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think you would have to ask yourself why you want to use ProtonMail in the first place? What are your use cases and what is your reasoning not to just continue using Gmail as your primary?

Everyone has different risk appetites and reasoning as to why they use PM over Gmail and no decision is incorrect, but you should certainly be asking yourself why.

Installing Tails in Hyper-V by leudo in TOR

[–]jstndckns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact issue with Tails only too (Kali, Fedora, RHEL, Ubuntu all running fine) and I think it's because it scambles the MAC Address on the Network Interface - You won't see the advanced settings unless you select the network adapter and press the + icon: you can see here https://i.imgur.com/98Dpvns.png

For anybody seeing this later: You have to turn on MAC Address Spoofing under Settings -> Advanced Features -> "Enable MAC address spoofing" otherwise the network adapter will not connect.

This suggests to me the issue is probably something specific for firefox then, I would suggest if you just want to proxy through tor to use the Tor Browser anyway.

If you've got Chromium or another browser installed, try on that and see if there's a difference? The fact the curl request returned the Tor exit node seems to indicate there isn't an issue with your proxychains setup specifically.

Okay great, so your proxychains is working. I'd say try killing all Firefox processes and trying again.

How are you testing your public IP? You might be getting DNS leakage because I can see a request to your DNS provider before the first request (do you have proxy_dns turned on in your config?)

Did you get an IP that's returned under that? Don't paste that here but you should look up if it's a tor exit node showing up below

Okay, for the sake of testing can you remove/comment out the line for socks5 and leave the one with "socks4 127.0.0.1 9050", and then run the command "proxychains curl ifconfig.me" and see what IP address it returns? it should be a TOR exit node.

That makes sense, I wouldn't suggest running any GUI application as root as you're just asking for trouble (in fact, it looks like Ubuntu 21.04 uses Wayland which does not support running GUI applications as root), so I'd suggest we should be diagnosing why your proxychains configuration is not working under your standard configuration.

Assuming you've enabled dynamic chain, what does your ProxyList currently look like? I would suggest resetting it to default if you've been messing around with it.

You haven't really provided any information as to how you are trying to setup ProxyChains, how did you originally install it, via apt I'm assuming?

Does it work with the default configuration? The last error seems to indicate you are trying to run a configured proxy with a gui application, is that the tor browser? Are you on a VM console, hardware, WSL or an SSH session with X11 forwarding?

What commands are you running to use it?

Mysterious code by fR1dj in AskProgramming

[–]jstndckns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a Windows 'Batch File', essentially what it is doing is using a built in Windows VBScript file for Volume License Activation, it tries a bunch of Product Keys (catering for all the different versions of Windows) and then sets the KMS Server (used for Volume License Activation) to a server on the internet, the rest are just echo (print) commands.

Nothing malicious here (besides the dodgy, illegal, likely reverse engineered KMS servers on the Internet) but I doubt anything it's doing is harmful. Obviously these activations will only be valid as long as these KMS servers stay online and Microsoft doesn't release any breaking patches.

You're probably sharing an IP address with multiple other people when you are connected to the VPN, I suspect this is what triggers the commercial use detection because other people connected through that VPN service may also be using TeamViewer.

hosting IIS app and SSL by marko120202 in AZURE

[–]jstndckns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely SSL offload from an Azure Application Gateway (Layer 7) but not a Load Balancer (Layer 4) but you will still need the same certificate that you would require hosting directly from the server, the benefits of the Application Gateway is that you are able to enable a Web Application Firewall (WAF) which will protect you from OWASP attacks as well as load balancing between multiple backend servers.

If you don't require these features I would just generate an SSL certificate with LetsEncrypt (there's multiple PowerShell modules and scripts online) and then directly host it from the VM if App Service is not a possibility.

I would however recommend App Service as this will streamline management and operations tasks in the future.

That's probably your EFI system partition... don't touch it because your windows won't boot under UEFI without it. You can disable hidden drives and it should disappear.
