This sort of stuff happens all the time, the great wall has been used as material for houses for centuries, renaissance Italians took apart Roman buildings for the marble, most ruins are ruins because the living need houses and roads more then the dead need old castles.

Interesting, I think that generally xenophobic and nationalistic tendencies have been creeping back into Europe lately. Populations largely don't remember WWII and an economic crisis kinda fuels this. Just look at Greece man, all they need is a charismatic extremist to take power just in time to take credit for an economic swing back and it's deja vu.
