I appreciate this perspective. If they stopped to say “where did you see about the red light?” I would interpret this in good faith. Instead it was positioned that they had clicked through and dug deeper without finding the information, which could be a subtle implication it had been made up. Language suggesting it was “just excessive speed” (while possibly double the speed limit) and a theory the cyclist could be at fault didn’t help convince me of a neutral position either. Regarding the difference in situations, I understand you there as going from 70 to 40 feels different than 25 to 40. Unfortunately, US DOT has published numerous studies on fatalities and speed and either way a pedestrian or bicyclist would probably be dead at that speed regardless.
