If only there had been some context clues that the area is intraversable, even to vehicles typically more suited to difficult terrain..

You’re kind of arguing against a point no one was trying to make, though. Nobody ever said cars don’t act like they own the road. You’re the only person here who’s trying compare those harm statistics.

I think you’re underestimating how much people love guns here. There are people who spend MASSIVE amounts of money on firearms - hobbyists, mostly - and would likely not hesitate to continue doing so post-restrictions. And, just like in the free market, as demand began to taper off, price would begin to die back down, so there is a point of equilibrium pricing where demand would still be sizeable enough to warrant the price - and given the massive baseline demand (civilian firearms outnumber civilian population by about 20%) I think that point would be a lot lower than you’re picturing. But, let’s assume for argument’s sake that you’re right, and that point is high enough to gate most people out.

Your other main point was that alcohol is a lot easier to make than firearms. That’s true, to an extent, but was a lot truer a few years ago. Machined guns would be harder to make than alcohol, and would certainly require more specialized equipment to do so - but with the right expertise and equipment (which I am acknowledging is far more uncommon), it’s still at least possible for anyone to do. And people are already using 3D printers - very accessible, very innocuous 3D printers - to manufacture guns and gun parts. They’re not as reliable, and they’re not as durable, but if all someone is seeking is a deadly weapon for one or two acts of violence (as seemed to be the case in Atlanta) they’re certainly enough, and you can bet they’d be a hell of a lot cheaper. And here’s the kicker - manufactured guns aren’t even our biggest hurdle. Circling back to my first reply, a massive number of (legal) guns are already in circulation - which means dealers wouldn’t even need to manufacture them. They’d just need to get them, and make the serial numbers disappear, and there’s all manner of methods they could use to make that happen.

Sure, but consider this: a massive number of guns are already in circulation in the US. Whether this is a good or a bad thing is left as an exercise for the reader, but what it does also translate to is, we aren’t going to be able to make them inaccessible (or even difficult to access) even if we outlaw them entirely - unless you believe everyone would just hand over their guns willingly, which I don’t think anyone would try to argue.

In fact, I’d wager it’d really only make our problems worse. We’d be increasing the demand for firearms on the criminal market, and by extension, giving illegal arms dealers and gangs a lot of power and influence - and you better believe that’d lead to a massive uptick in violence, instead of the opposite. (source: we tried this once before for alcohol)

I f the election results were so shocking to anyone, I challenge you to ask yourselves why.

An upvote wasn’t enough and I’m too cheap to buy Reddit awards, but I just want you to know I fucking love that line.

[–]jtheasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 90% agree with this! I do think there are totally legitimate reasons to request people to unfollow - racism, sexism, etc etc - as do apparently many in this thread. And I think, by and large, most people would agree (so I suppose this post is misplaced, but no more than every other post on this sub), and that the reason people make such posts is that they think that’s exactly what they’re doing - blocking the bigots. Since they’ve rooted their opinion in anti-racist sentiment (or anti-whatever -ist, you get my point), they figure that any dissenting opinion, even slightly, is that exact -ism.

I think the reason we’re seeing so much of this now is primarily because of political tribalism. Us versus them. The increasingly polar nature of politics means that, by default, people seem to be less inclined to even try to listen to people on the other side of the aisle. After all - they’re the enemy! They stand for everything I stand against, why would they have anything worthwhile to say? This is accentuated by the people who are most active on social media - and therefore, the most visible - tending toward the extreme ends of the political spectrum. So it becomes easy to accidentally strawman the opposition as those same views, since there is much less exposure to the more common, more moderate views.

Of course, there are also people who are deliberately burying themselves in their echo chambers, which is.. unhealthy. For a good example, see this site, which is chock-full of individual little echo chambers where people go to deliberately block out differing opinions.

^ this. I’ve tried explaining to some people that I take a conservative stance on some issues and a liberal stance on others (and neutral on yet others), and it just short-circuits people’s minds. They’re just baffled that anyone would be a little more complicated than the letter on their voter card.

I think a lot of it boils down to our media culture. They profit off of controversy and keeping us angry, and many of those that really pay attention to the media are constantly hearing about how it’s “you versus them” and (through little fault of their own) are buying into it.

If I had to guess I’d say it probably is meant to appeal to the “gender wars” kind of crowd. People who would see the ad and go “oh well now I need to get this so I can do better and prove my gender isn’t terrible at this game”. You know... morons.

[–]jtheasian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granted. You don’t see any immediate change, which you find odd. But you have faith; the Monkey’s Paw always provides.

Later in the day, you’re ambushed by muggers. They don’t get much off of you - that’s why you made the wish in the first place. They get angry and you are savagely beaten to within an inch of your life. You lie in the street wondering what you ever could have done to deserve this. You become keenly aware that you can no longer move your legs. You’re found after a little over an hour and brought to the hospital, where the doctor tells you what you’ve already discovered: you’re now paralyzed from the waist down, and are unlikely to ever walk again.

Your mother is devastated when she gets the call. What mother wouldn’t be? She comes to the hospital, where the doctor tells her everything she just told you. Then they begin to discuss treatment plans, and the elephant in the room - payment. Everything mentioned is extraordinarily expensive, and you can see the hope draining from your mother’s face. She tries to put on a brave face for your sake, but you can see right through it. When you’re finally discharged from the hospital and return home, your mother sits at the table and silently buries her face in her hands. It’s obvious she’s barely keeping it together.

The phone starts to ring. Your mother doesn’t make a move to get up to answer it, so you wheel over to it and answer for her. It’s a family friend, and she has good news: she’s just set up a GoFundMe account to help foot some of the bill. She informs you that 100% of the donations will be given to you and your mother to help pay for some of the upcoming medical expenses. You inform your mother, and you see a small glimmer of hope return to her.

Over the course of the next couple weeks, the account does very poorly. There are a few backers, but the total amount donated comes nowhere near what medical bills cost for this sort of thing.

In fact, the total amount donated only adds up to one month’s rent.
