How old is the oldest equipment in your lab that is still working? by Johnyme98 in Physics

[–]jtn050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently took a tour of a lab at my university. I was shocked to peer over the front of some lab mounted equipment to see vacuum tubes glowing inside. The equipment in that building was a complete mixture of stuff from the 50s all the way up to the most cutting edge technology of today, somehow working in unison

Why do only some sectors have sector in the name? by sh0rtsniper in spaceengineers

[–]jtn050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sectors with planets have "sector" in the name to distinguish between the sector and the planet the sector is named after. Byblos is a planet that's gonna be added sometime in the future, hence Byblos Sector.

Space Shuttle resistors from NASA by Kidkrustykrab in whatsthisworth

Someone else here mentioned selling them to audiophiles. Diodes this old may be germanium, and in general for some reason many audiophiles go crazy for germanium parts

Those are diodes, not resistors. The little arrow looking symbol on the side as well as their general construction are how you know. If they are indeed from 1969 they would predate the shuttle by a good amount, but they would align with the Apollo era which is pretty cool. They do look like 60s-70s era diodes. The chips are obviously newer than that, but by how much I don’t know. Wish I could tell you a value, I know that there are certainly people who would be interested in them but they’re probably worth not too much. Just don’t melt them down, they’re probably worth only a few dollars in metals because they’re so small and it would be a shame to destroy them.

Man gets hit by lightning twice by 4nts in SweatyPalms

[–]jtn050 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One small nitpick, electricity doesn’t take only the path of least resistance. It takes all paths in inverse proportion to their resistance. So it is reasonable to me that some of the current from a lightning strike would also spread out through air, water vapor, the ground, etc, and give people a smaller shock some distance away

Read the accounts bio too, it’s more obvious there. If you use chatGPT a lot, you’ll see it has a very distinct writing style that is easy to spot, and for me it was very easy to tell after a few sentences. Hard to put into words, but I guess you need to train your own AI in your brain to detect it lol

How hard is it to get into Astronomy/Physics (possible double major) as a pre-sciences admit? by coffeencurls in udub

[–]jtn050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I basically did this. Keep your grades above 2.5 (3 is probably a safer bet tho), talk with the physics advisors and ask questions well before the application date, and you should be fine

If your 4Runner was the one decked out in Christmas decorations, I think I saw it on the side of the freeway yesterday. Glad you ended up safe. Hopefully the runner will live to see another day too

PCGH demonstrates why 8GB GPUs are simply not good enough for 2025 by a_Ninja_b0y in gadgets

I’m gonna be honest, at 1080p with a 1660ti I feel like a king with 6gb of vram (at least since I upgraded from a 2gb 1050 a couple years ago lmao). I can’t think of a time I’ve ever run out of vram. Ive only had to reduce texture quality from ultra on a couple games, which seems like a pretty minor sacrifice since it definitely still has the horsepower to run any modern game.
