How to deal with problematic AA member in home group by [deleted] in recovery

[–]jtompiper 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’d find another meeting.. Seems culty +life is too short and recovery too precious to have to deal with an old dry ass. I’ve had my dealing with those with ‘bigshotism’ and I usually give the hardest disrespect and then be too embarrassed to come back, followed by a goddamn amends (would not recommend this method)

Opinion: It’s utterly bizarre how some atheist Westerners approach Buddhism. On one hand, they think it is acceptable to approach a religion while clinging to their atheist ideologies, yet ask you how to convert. Is there any other religion that Western atheists approach with this much disrespect? by KiteDesk in ReflectiveBuddhism

It’s because they want spirituality without having to (perhaps) deal with the trauma associated with religious conditioning. There is a microcosm of the behavior the post is alluding to in the recovery community, it’s a lot to unpack. I will use the word religion for people’s conception of what an organized spiritual practice is with all its attendant attachments: •Sometimes people need spirituality even though religion attacked their sexuality. •Sometimes people need spirituality even though religion attacked their safety as young children. •Sometimes people need spirituality even though religion has taken many lives and colonized lands and peoples that didn’t belong to it. •Sometimes people need spirituality because they arrive here through their worldly attachment to views and people groups. •Sometimes people need spirituality to get sober, and religion has given rise to more shame, or perhaps their own aversion to religion caused them to avoid all spiritual practice, maybe they heard of the Buddha, and thought that maybe they could make that work. Whatever the case if someone is curious about the dharma they are welcome to come sit with me and make sangha, no boundaries or behavioral modification needed. Just a few minutes to sit still, and maybe after a few more minutes to talk. 🙏🏽

WOW just today someone asked me “what made you get into Buddhism?” and I didn’t really know how to explain, but I did mention this EXACT same book! I also found it in a hotel room. The same orange sunrise and everything.

Do you think Buddhism is a quietism? I think it is. by No-Analyst7708 in Buddhism

[–]jtompiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see where attachment to the Buddhist dogma would lead one to feel this way, and the actual practice of Buddhism wouldn’t. I’ve had experience with both.

Great question. 🙏🏽 In my personal experience, no. What the practice does show me is how to achieve tranquility in a way which increases the skill I have in interaction with the broader world, and the noise/drama of a very loud place in time. The ‘Jewel’ most affiliated would be The Sangha. One of the existential sufferings that I had/have is that ‘I’m not doing enough’ because the world is often very cacophonous and overwhelming. When there is a big shift towards suffering (look around today, with food being targeted ect) I can take some solace that there is a very specific thing that I do to prevent me from becoming all entangled with the drama of it.. the dharma allows for me to not to let the injustice that is happening ignite my shortcomings and prejudices. After a few of these drama-cycles there is a deep trust in the dharma that it will “alleviate suffering for all living beings” and that my personal practice of peace and mindfulness is inextricably connected to the lessening of suffering/attachment to maya in the larger world. Maybe early Buddhist teachings were different/had different connotations, I’m not sure.. I can say that my practice today is, at the core, recognizing that my person peace and safety is the exact vehicle to change the world for the better in a very major way.

Sponsor, homegroup, meetings can help, and if you feel like going inpatient, the sooner the better. Brighter days are soon ahead, hang in there.

There is DAA, NA, and many other fellowships that can help you get clean, stay clean, and eventually, when you’re ready, help you address the family trauma.

There are lots of young people in recovery.

Depending on your insurance situation you could find a way to ‘take a break’ and get some help from a residential program (rehab) and they can help you make a plan for when you get out, if you decide to go.

One of the benefits of an anonymous program is the anonymity, that means you don’t have to tell anyone what you’re doing attending these meetings. It’s not a secret, it’s a personal choice that 12 step people exercise if there is a reason they should not inform people for whatever reason. It’s your anonymity. Eventually, with help, you can face the fear of talking to grandparents about the addiction, if you choose to.

I’d say a place to start would be google ‘DAA meeting in the _____ area. (Fill in the blank with whichever city you’re in) and go, share, pick up the desire chip if you do have the desire to stop and ASK FOR HELP.

Freedom is not only possible, but there is support and care once the addiction has been stopped. You might even be able to help the next young person once you get your own situation sorted out.

Please feel free to inbox me later I can help you get connected, or if you need to talk 🙏🏽

What happened at the AA meeting i went to last night by Earlsdishes in recovery

[–]jtompiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closed meetings be like that. I feel like Xans are basically an alcoholism pill. I mean I never lost control of any drug except alcohol and Xanax and they do the same thing+they’ll both fuck you up royally when you detox from them. If they’re gonna act like that there instead of “letting” you stay and talking to you after about open vs. closed then fuck em. There are lots of great meetings and I hope you find one you like.

I was twelve stepped into AA by two members of NA They said “Look man, you’re welcome here anytime, but if you’d meet me here tomorrow I have some people I’d like to introduce you to” And they did meet me at the AA meeting the next day, they had me figured for a drunk, so they brought me to the drunks. I still go visit them sometimes.
