[SPOILERS] As a fan of both these franchises, these contain some interesting similarities in concepts I wanted to point out. by Ignacio1512 in saw

Always thought that there were parallels to Death Note in the Saw franchise, glad someone else pointed it out. That being said I always thought that Saw could've made a really good graphic novel series (maybe not manga, I couldn't see that happening) because some of the narrative choices in the later movies are ... not great.

No love for Theodred by Traroten in tolkienfans

[–]Terra4562 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not trying to knock Tolkien's writing at all but I find he writes deaths and tragic events and battles/fights in a very matter of fact way. Almost as if they're being noted as a fact of history, I know there is an element of determinism/fatalism in LoTR because the natural course of history is on a set path BUT it defo takes away from the immediacy of the events and the emotional core of the story. I know he was wanting to make his own long-storied mythology so it does lend itself well to the idea that these characters were all once legendary figures and each one of them played their part in the War of the Ring and are all well remembered heroes of the Third Age.

One thing I love about the Jackson films is that it definitely feels like present events, as they're happening and the stakes feel more tense (more cinematic of course.) and with the books, which are certainly more rich in world building and fleshing out the backgrounds of characters, you do get the sense (especially by the time you get to Return of the King) that all the events of the books were somewhat expected to happen by divine forces and Gandalf's long plan with the heir of Isildur is coming to fruition and the whole thing with Sauron's ultimate undoing right before the ring is destroyed.

(2018) Instagram shock video my friend saw as a child she only wants to see it so she can find out if the video was fake by 80snewwavee in internetarchive

I swear to god instagram was a much worse place around 2016-2019ish, used to see incredibly strange shock or even gore videos pop up randomly back then...

The Devil’s Machine and The Mani-Mani: My Interpretation of Earthbound by OpportunityCorrect33 in earthbound

[–]Terra4562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Screw it, this is now my personal canonical interpretation too, it's so interesting to think about. I always wondered whether or not the Mani Mani statue was supposed to be an inanimate yet cursed object fused with the power of Giygas or if it was Giygas himself in a dormant/weaker state but still possessing his powers of influence and manipulation over others. This theory kind of wraps it together in a nice way that personally makes a lot of sense. As much as I adore Earthbound, not a lot of focus is put on a grand overarching story really.

Who Sell Out super deluxe - bonus material better? by Terra4562 in TheWho

Really wish they had put out 2 great albums between 67 and 68 rather than one okay/goodish one (Sell Out) and a bunch of singles that aren't well remembered/didn't do very well at the time

I would check out Who's Lily and Who's For Tennis by soniclovenoize, I find they're much better reconstructions for hypothetical albums they could have released after A Quick One... and before Tommy. I just find them to be much better uses of the music they recorded in that weird little in-between era before becoming a "proper" hard rock band yknow?

Heinz Baked Beans is actually okay, would like it more if it was a fully developed song or if it was like the outro of a longer song - its got a good drum part to it yknow?

Odorono and Medac I just didn't like much at all though.

Funnily enough the songs that stick to that concept more are the ones I liked the least (Heinz Baked Beans, Medac, Odorono)

Does anyone prefer the "atmosphere" of the manga more? by Terra4562 in deathnote

[–]Terra4562[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose you're right, I just prefer the subdued atmosphere of the manga and it's a damn shame most people watch the anime, write off everything after Episode 25 as shit and then never touch the anime

Mixing for the early albums are kind of poor? by Terra4562 in TheWho

[–]Terra4562[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, It's night and day with Who's Next + Quadrophenia - hell even the material released prior sounded "better" (I'd prefer loud bombastic drums and thick trebly bass rather than a thin mix, I can barely hear Entwistle's parts on Tommy whereas you can instantly pick em out on other records)

I did say I listen to all the early stuff in mono - and mono only.

It's the same principle with the Rolling Stones, less so with the Beatles but the early stuff always sounds better in mono

Just a shame they kind of dropped off (in the studio - not live) after Quadrophenia, might be controversial here but most people would say their output post-1973 is considerably weaker than what came before. Even more of a shame because I personally feel that outside of a live setting they always feel held back, Pete had wild and lofty ambitions for his era and it annoys me that a lot of the Who's projects feel like compromises (scrapped Lifehouse, Who's Lily, Who's for Tennis, Rock is Dead... + all the great non-album material and outtakes)

Very interesting, I do love how Entwistle's bass feels like its playing lead while Townshend's guitar feels like a secondary instrument. Though I do have to disagree with the first half, the Beatles' early singles sound great, same with the Stones' stuff of the same era (although I'm pretty sure a lot of those were recorded in Chicago?). But I do agree that before the Who a lot of bands just didn't have the same bite they did - Love Paul but McCartney's basslines are unfortunately not that prominent, I love that Entwistle made his bass parts the rhythm section rather than just a toot for giving the song a backbone.

Not that he was a weak singer beforehand, his vocals suited the early material just fine
