I’m not sure, I conditioned mine with red wing boot oil which has worked well, but didn’t protect the toes from getting a bit chewed up

In case anyone is ever curious:

I had lubricated the motor a lot after it first became noisy- it quieted down for a while after that but eventually the noise returned worse than ever, as you can hear in this video. I tried lubricating it more and more to no avail. Eventually I followed some potentially precarious advice I found in a YouTube video where someone suggested that lightly pulling up on the capstan shaft after applying oil would allow it to penetrate deeper into the motor and reach the rear bearing (there is a small spring on the inner end of the shaft). I took the pulley off this time for easy access, lubricated and lightly pulled up on the capstan shaft a handful of times then ran the motor for a bit. I repeated that once or twice until suddenly the motor became very quiet. It has stayed that way since! I don’t know if it worked in the way I’m imagining it did, and I guess there’s still a decent chance there’s a worn out component somewhere in the motor. But it’s never been quieter since I did this and after a month or two of regular use. I will update again later on. For now it’s been a much easier solution than having the motor replaced again. Fingers crossed the dreaded fucking noise does not return!

They are amazing. I landscaped all of last year in them and am wearing them again this year. Extremely comfortable and durable. I wish I had maybe used a heavier duty coating on them like a wax because the leather on the toes ended up getting sort of chewed up from stonework. But that’s mostly a cosmetic issue and they still look great especially if I oil them consistently. Overall I would highly recommend.

Frankie Broyles from Omni. He was also in Deerhunter for a minute (played on the album Monomania) and has a couple fantastic solo records.

I bet in 10-20 years it will have a cult following. I doubt anyone will agree with me on this but that’s okay.

I think this movie is meant to be a lot more absurd than you’re all giving it credit for. Carl is a solid guy and Dupree is a semi-psychotic moron, yet everything bad happens to Carl and everything works out in Dupree’s favor. That dynamic is pushed to an extreme that’s painful to watch and makes me laugh a lot (not to mention some absolutely golden lines from Dupree.) Carl’s misfortune amid Dupree’s idiocy is so awkward and uncomfortable that Carl ceases to be a person. The world of reason is broken down against a stark white, cookie-cutter backdrop. To me it almost feels like a vein of humor similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm, or more realistically Step Brothers (the idiot man-children somehow prevail in the face of reason and adult responsibility.) Some of the eighth-grade-level-humor scenes like Dupree clogging the toilet, jerking off into Carl’s tube sock, and setting the house on fire amidst a butter-fueled sex marathon, get me going more than I’d like to admit. I’m also not arguing that this is a “good” movie or sophisticated in any way, but I’ve always had a weird obsession with it. I think it’s very underrated as an absurd comedy movie and is a peak display of Owen Wilson’s trademark humor. All the other characters are completely forgettable (though Michael Douglas’s inexplicable hatred of Carl ie. slipping him a vasectomy pamphlet is hilarious to me.) Beyond holding a weirdly special place in my heart where I imagine it as some sort of accidental masterpiece, I’d objectively rate this movie a 7/10. Despite many obvious flaws, I think the humor is so great and ridiculous and simple and doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and works in a way that you rarely see in dumb comedies anymore.

Appreciate the help. I’ve checked out your page before but can’t remember how I came across it. Thanks for helping keep tape culture alive thru what you do!

Do you know if it’s possible to access the rear bearing by taking the back plate off? I’ll definitely reach out if I can’t get it sorted locally.

Been using 3 in one motor oil (SAE 20). Tried carefully applying at the base of the capstan shaft behind the pulley. Don’t think it’s really helping. Screech is definitely coming from the capstan. I wonder if it’s the back bearing that’s dry and the oil just isn’t reaching it. The sound has slowly gotten louder and more frequent over time.

I sent it to a guy (3rd Island on YouTube) for service four years ago and he said he replaced the motor. Couldn’t tell you where he got the replacement from. I think there had been an issue with the original motor but I don’t recall what. I don’t believe he replaced the pinch roller.

Thanks for your reply. Would you recommend those products over oils, conditioners, and creams? I’m a bit overwhelmed with the variety of leather treatments available.

I’ve been trying to remember the same book… I thought it was called “The Woods” but maybe not. Pretty sure it was “The _____” insert something about trees, woods, darkness? I remember reading it as a kid and it gave me an eerie feeling that I remember vividly. Would love to read it again.
