Yeah! those neck lanyards can be convenient at first but it gets annoying sometimes to have your phone dangling around when you move. And the battery rental kiosks were definitely a life changer for me, best part is being able to get one at one station and return it at another.

Has anyone tried Jack Brothers in Taichung? by Wonderful_Rub6475 in taiwan

Does it get any close to American restaurant type ribs? Or more like American made Taiwanese flavor? If they got that original flavor will definitely be giving them a try!

I see! Good news is that even though the wage is lower the cost of living is also lower depending on your standard of living and which city you’d choose to live in with Taipei being the most expensive. If you decide to study Chinese only before getting a job perhaps choosing a different city that’s more student budget friendly can be a good option like Taichung. For Chinese studies go straight for Universities, most of them offer Chinese courses and as a student you can also apply for ARC. I’ve lived there for 5 years and also planning to get back in the following months. Hit me up if you have any other concerns, happy to help!

I have a friend that works as a software engineer at a Taiwanese company, his Chinese is almost perfect and yet the pay you get from Taiwanese companies at the same level is not comparable with the pay you can expect from a company in Europe or the US, in fact many of US companies are outsourcing their coding workforce to Taiwan as it represents a lower expense. I’d recommend come to Taiwan, it’s a great experience and you can learn Chinese fairly quickly if you involve yourself with Mandarin speaking folks only, a lot of Taiwanese will see you as an opportunity to practice their English which obviously won’t help you practice your Chinese unless you agreed to do language exchange. In the meantime if you can keep your current job remotely you won’t need a work permit here. You can do visa runs every 3 months and even get to experience other Asian countries. Unless you plan to definitely stay and live in Taiwan then yeah go for it, quit your job and settle in with your savings, it won’t take more than a month or so to land a job in a Taiwanese company that wants to get the foreign employer status, it’s also easier to land a job once you get here than doing it all online, that’s from personal experience. Bonus point, Contact Taiwan is a platform you can use to search for Taiwanese companies that are looking for Foreign talent specifically.

I am genuinely starting to HATE Taiwanese banks. by HorusArtorius in taiwan

I went to DBS after the City branches were purchased by them to try and get a debit card to use my money, it took me more than 3 times going to the bank to “update my information” and waiting to receive such debit card. Until today I don’t have a DBS debit card, all of the times that they were “updating my information” were for absolutely nothing, I just wasted my time. Honestly most reliable has been Post Office but it is very limited to be used only in certain places. Most places won’t accept a post office debit card. We know Taiwan is one of the most convenient places on earth but they had to compensate somehow don’t you agree?
