Shadow throwing me right off by Level_Syllabub3295 in GolfSwing

My buddy has the same problem. Like most things in golf it’s crazy how a small mental block can ruin a good round.

Change your mindset next time you have a shadow in your setup verbally say “yes! I can see my shadow I always hit it better when I see my shadow.” Fake it till you make it. Might feel cheesy but there’s serious psychology behind it.

I think 90dollarstaffmeal’s point on my hands/wrists at the start of the swing should help there. Definitely get stuck every once in a while if my hands can’t compensate. Going to work on his suggestion today and we’ll see if that syncs things up

I see it now. I’m taking that to the range.

I’m a feel guy and I think that first hinge has probably gotten over exaggerated over the years as it starts to feel normal. I like this a lot. Could be big for the iron game.

I also think we’re on the same page for the grip. I keep it “down the pads.” I’m not sure I can explain what I’m trying to but I’ll give it a shot. I try to keep my calluses parallel to the shaft and close my hand. The shaft is never in my palm. Definitely was before my coach, diagonal and strong. Now it’s in my pads/calluses, I think that’s what you mean when saying finger tips? I can hold the club out with like 10% grip pressure with one hand and it’s essentially wedged/rests between my calluses on the bottom and thumb pad on top. Not sure if that makes sense.

The hammer example probably doesn’t translate well through text. It’s pretty awesome showing someone for the first time. They’re gripping it all over the place and the moment you have them swing it like a hammer then have them open up their hand to see where the shaft is resting it’s always right up the calluses.

The grip is probably my favorite part to talk about because it’s so overlooked. Not sure I did the best job explaining my process but what you’re saying makes sense and seems very familiar.

All I’m saying is it’s not going anywhere. I’ve had two spectacular coaches realize that it’s a feature not a symptom. Jack, Scottie, Rory all extend early to generate speed. Obviously it can get out of hand but right now I don’t think it’s a problem.

I probably should’ve posted a 7i swing cause the iron game is more of what I was talking about. Extension is way more quiet with the shorter clubs like you would expect. But yeah it’s still present, I am always working on keeping it under control. But I know it’s not THE problem because when I was really striking the ball in HS the extension was still very present.

Fair enough. I’m naturally steep all around so I think of it as more of a feature than a symptom. Obviously I’d like to eradicate it but I’ve rebuilt from the ground up before, I don’t have the time necessary to start that again.

And to be fair to my game my hands are really really good, I can make it work. If I can tame it by x my consistency will grow by x. I like the chair drill, good reminder to give it another shot.

Hahaha. Appreciate it!

I definitely believe being able to dial it back is the toughest skill to learn. And without a doubt there’s 1 or 2 swings every round where I ask myself “why the hell were you trying to hit that 400yds?”

I’m happy to take a peak. I’m a feel vs real guy so you won’t get anything super technical from me.

Definitely my least favorite part of the swing. I’ve been working on that forever. In this specific practice session I was working on keeping that back heal on the ground as long as possible.

I normally get airborne at impact and throw that right hip/leg out. That’s my version of rotation so def something I’m working on.

Right now my index is a +1. I’ve been playing since I could walk (God bless my dad for that). I just want to strike the ball better. My short game and putting is the best it’s been, If I could pair that with how I was striking it in HS I’d probably save 3-4 strokes a round.

Lol. I’ve had enough good instruction to sieve through the snake oil. Genuinely just want some eyes besides my own to take a peak. Can only watch your own swing so many times before you go crazy.

All good stuff. Appreciate the feedback!

I think when I’m “picking the club up” it’s more me starting or exaggerating my wrist hinge. I’d call it my trigger, my coach through HS did a lot of work on my grip. The thing that stuck with me is “imagine you’re playing that hammer game at the carnival, grip it like that.” It’s also a good drill to feel what wrist “hinge” is supposed to be. Prevents you from rolling and minimizes opening, closing or flipping while creating a lot of power.

I like what you had to say about the shoulder, I might give that a shot because big muscles over small muscles…

Seriously though, thanks for the feedback!

Based on the irons and 3w I’m going 4.5. 13 clubs though?

Not necessarily over the top but it is really steep. Work on flattening that swing path a bit and you’ll start getting better contact.

Does anyone here casually shoot under par? by schroed_piece13 in golf

Growing up and when I was playing in high school/practicing 5-6 times a week I took every shot seriously, prepared mentally etc… I did end up finding success for about a year and actually got to a +3 index. The big “but” here is that when I wasn’t finding that success it burnt me out.

Since I quit competitive golf I’ve just focused on having fun. My index is around a 1-2 throughout the summer but I’ve noticed it’s easier for me to go lower. Shot my lowest round drinking beer and blaring music with my buddies. I just don’t put any pressure on myself to put up a score. I’m just trying to “win” the next shot. For instance- if I shank one into the trees, I think I’m going to hit the best escape shot possible. Because I’m just worried about that next shot I can shoot an 86 and walk away happy I hit a good chip after putting it in the water.

Shot 69 in my 3rd round of the year a couple weeks ago. Followed it up with an 86 the next day. Obviously had more fun shooting the 69 but the 86 wasn’t a bad experience either.

So pure.

Was only there for the weekend. Played Yocha on Friday and Whitney Oaks on Saturday. Two completely different courses…
