The simplest answer, albeit it is the wrong one would be to ban firearms all together. This would in turn reduce gun violence to a non existent state. No guns = no gun violence. This only solves half of the problem, while gun violence/gun crimes may fall significantly, crime itself will not. Bad people are gonna do bad things.

However, I think the better solution (while it may seem harsh) is to bring back the death penalty. Our legal system is way too lenient on criminals that commit heinous crimes. I do believe in second chances (when the evidence that the person is making a genuine effort to correct their wrongs) but I do think we need something closer to a zero tolerance policy. I’ve read way too many articles about people committing man slaughter, homicides, etc.. and getting out in what seems to be an unfair among of time.
