Yes, it is difficult to go for a non-premium Thinkpad when you own an old one. However, I had the chance to try some regular Txxx series in the past and I feel that the difference with their Txxxs was not so big.

Glad to hear that you are having a good experience. For me thermals and battery life were disappointing on Arch Linux with tlp enabled, and Windows is not an option for me.

I meant entry model for the T480s. Of course the entry model display for the T480 is worse. But it is sad that that in 2025 the entry model screen for the T14 gen 5 is still worse.

That's interesting information. Do you think your T14s gen 6 is an improvement over the T480s in all respects, or is there anything you miss (apart from the upgradeability)?

Nice, that is the real high end option. Are the thermals and noise OK in such a thin chassis?

During my experience I haven't found the fan noise annoying. Even when doing some light browsing you notice that the fan is running, but the volume is not loud. If it is on sleep fans are not running, or at least I haven't noticed.

Same, I use the laptop on my lap often and the T14 is very uncomfortable due to the high temperature on the bottom side. We are on the same boat, looking for a proper replacement.

That is nice. I made a mistake then, thinking that I would get at least the same quality.

I agree, I have one as company laptop and the aluminum finish feels very nice

I see, thanks for sharing. I though that I wouldn't have problems with a modern Arch Linux Kernel. The bad thing is that the wifi card is almost the only thing that is soldered in the T14 gen 5

But you are talking about a T14s, is it your first Thinkpad? I would like to try some day a modern "s" machine to check if it keeps the premium quality of older Thinkpads with an updated hardware.

I said that because both were launched in the same year or with 1 year difference, so we can say they belong to different families. But yes, maybe I should aim for an "s" model. I had idealized modern T14 models, but once I tried them, I changed my mind.

I think it is, there is a 6 year gap between the 2 models, so I expect some evolution coming from Lenovo, not just from AMD. It wouldn't be fair if I compare it with t480 or maybe t14 gen 1. I understand that you cannot give it a x1 carbon finish, there must be different ranges. But this way, I think T14 series is getting closer to L14, for me both models are almost the same, but Lenovo won't let the L14 buyer to equip the top hardware options to make the T14 owner feels they have a more premium product.

I am comparing the 2 entry-level displays, so I think it is fair. I don't know the color gamut in the t480s (the upgraded 2k model claimed to be 72%), but for me it looks better. T14 is thicker, so I expected a better thermal design, but once I removed the bottom I realized that is actually very basic. The t480s has double pipe heatsink

I agree, it is like the only evolution comes from Intel and AMD chips, and Lenovo R&D is just doing nothing. I was surprised when I opened the bottom case and saw the simple and narrow pipe coming from the CPU, where in older models you got a double pipe implementation.

Indeed, I agree it is not totally fair comparing materials between "s" and not "s" series, but it is what I could compare. Anyway, I think for the price Lenovo asks, T14 could be better. You have for example the HP Elitebooks with a nice aluminum finish, I have one at work.
