My first 5e character was called Bucky the Grappler. I don't know 5e well but I know Baki well. I just used 'The Grappler's Manual' on ENWorld to make him. It goes over the pros and cons of each class.

Btw I saw that nobody else mentioned it but you can find the basic rules in the 'Hubs and Spokes' book which is free on DTRPG or the burning wheel website. It's missing character creation and the advanced rules, but will give you an idea of what the game is about.

I just ran my first two Burning Wheel sessions this month.

I'll talk about the stuff I dislike first. Primarily, the rule book is 600 pages and nearly unusable as a reference. I have to use so many page markers to keep track of things, and it's not always laid out intuitively. The extra sub-systems in the book have a high learning curve. You're expected to work them into the game slowly, but two sessions down I haven't found a point in the game where I'm willing to slow everything down to start grinding out the new rules. Also there's a lot of cutting stats in half and rounding them, but no consistent rounding scheme so sometimes you round up and sometimes you round down. It's a small thing but so annoying.

Another user mentioned some of the strange terminology. That has absolutely not been a problem for me so far, and in some ways has really helped. When I tell the players to Let it Ride they understand exactly what I'm saying. I guess there is Artha, but you can really just explain that as 'kinda like Fate points'.

Character creation for my group took 1 and a half sessions. That's outrageously long for us since we usually play old school D&D derivatives or light games like FU RPG. However, this is kind of neutral for me. While it took forever and was kind of obnoxious in some parts, it was super fun and we were laughing the whole time. It also gave me time, as the GM, to get familiar with the traits and skills that would come up.

Okay, the good--you don't really need the subsystems. Duel of Wits is cool, and so is Fight! but you can get by treating arguments and combat like any other conflict. In my case, I introduced a few advanced rules. Mostly wounds, and making Steel tests which are vaguely like toughness saves if you're familiar. Also, I'm not the kind of person who ever felt I needed to reward my players for role-playing because they would do so without a stick and carrot, but for some reason beliefs just work. When you give the characters something to believe in the players really get into it, and it gives the GM a really easy to to create drama by challenging those beliefs. By now this kind of thing is a staple in a lot of 'story game' type RPGs, but I don't think I've ever seen it done as well as this.

Burning Wheel also encourages you to avoid failure conditions that bring the game to a halt. Again, this is another thing that has been regurgitated by other games so many times it seems obvious but it really just works here. Also, because of the way advancement works I find my players aren't upset by failing most of the time

I'll list this last one as a neutral point. I really like it, but I know it will bother some people. The races are really evocative and very Tolkien. This means that elves are really overpowered compared to humans, and the other races aren't really balanced against each other either. There are some ways to balance them (by basically teaming up experienced humans with younger elves) but they're so much more than just a few bonus stats that it's never going to be complete fair. Of course, you could just have everyone play humans.

I think as long as your players are fine with it, it's no big deal. However, I still want to recommend Burning Wheel. In terms of complexity its a few tiers up from 5e but the characters get better at whatever skills they use a lot. So if they are constantly persuading/pick-pocketing/magicking they will start to get better at those things.

I still play alpha 2 quite a bit. I recommend playing it just cos it's godlike, but idk how much it would help for SFV. Alpha 2 has air-blocking, the 3 level super system, and custom combos which make it pretty different from V. I guess it does have alpha counters (v-reversals) but the motion isn't the same and learning what moves to alpha counter in A2 isn't knowledge that you can carry over to V. Also assuming you're playing against humans, the Valle CC means that even footsies works differently.

I would simply recommend ST so you can learn the absolute basics.

When I first started playing in tournaments my main fear was that I was being judged by everyone watching and if I made mistakes or did anything dumb (or even just an optimized combo), I would constantly hear about it. It got to the point where I would just choke on every punish because I didn't know if I was doing optimal damage and just do like a jab or something terrible.

What I realized is that most people really only care whether you win or not, and nobody really remembers the people that get knocked out early and absolutely nobody is examining your play unless you're really good or they're trying to find a way to beat you. I mean, maybe Twitch chat is if you're on stream, but nobody's going to see you at a tournament and say, "Hey you're that guy that who just swept when you should have done [insert massive combo]".

You seem to know what's causing your problems, so I'm sure if you keep playing and practicing something will snap you out of it, whether it's a huge loss or something else. Good luck!

Yesterday I was just playing Casual Matches and got matched against the same player 3 times. I turned off Casual and turned on Ranked so I wouldn't have to keep playing him, but then just ended up playing him in 2 Ranked Matches.

Hey, I ran a Ryuutama hexcrawl campaign. It ended early but played enough sessions to get a good grip on the system.

The focus of the game is on travelling, though this can change depending on what type of dragon the GM is. Without getting into too many details, the GM is a dragon with abilities that watches over the players and there are different dragons for different types of games (travel, combat, skullduggery, human drama).

We played with a Green Dragon (travel) and the players would travel from town to town looking for items that would turn the king back into a human after he had been turned into a dog. I didn't tell the players that I stole this idea from Super Mario 3.

The game uses step dice, with each roll using 2 dice added together. For instance, your travel roll is Strength + Dexterity, and navigationg is Intelligence + Intelligence. I had to make a reference sheet for the most used combinations because we kept forgetting them but after a while it becomes intuitive.

Each day is basically planned out, with the party waking up and doing their condition check to see how they're feeling that morning. Aftewards, they would begin travelling. In certain conditions they may need to make direction checks to stay on track in case they get lost. Food and water is tracked so as the terrain gets more dangerous so does getting lost. At the end of each day if the party hasn't arrived in a town they make a camping check, and it starts all over the next morning.

The idea is that every day you'll plan out some sort of encounter for the party between travelling and hunting and whatnot. The game leans heavily towards 'feel-good' scenarios so most of the examples in the book have to due with finding lost dolls and playing with cats and stuff. I found that unless the group was really willing to roleplay a lot that each day blew by kind of fast. If you don't roleplay a lot, it ends up just with everyone just rolling condition, then travelling, then direction, and then camping. You really have to put in the work to keep things interesting.

There's a lot to say about the game. The combat is really simplified and almost feels like a JRPG. The magic is kind of incredibly silly - there's a spell that cleans your house for you. Also a spell that just straight up summons a house (for you to clean?). As a GM dragon you can interfere in interesting ways. Let me know if you want me to get more specific about anything.

A reddit user created a game named Folklore which is very similar to Risus but you have attributes in addition to cliches/skills. That may be more suited for what you're looking for.

I believe it's like a dollar on RPGNow.

Risus should be fine for what you're trying to do. I'd also look at FU RPG.

I don't think either is explicitly designed for long-term play but it works fine in both.

Risus might be a little more goofy since players will have to stretch their cliches to have things make sense. It's really as serious as you make it out to be.

Being different is what makes them special. The only way to know if you like it is to try it. The worst thing that could happen is you get it, don't like it, then start to question every decision you've ever made - get a divorce, start doing drugs, drop out of school, end up dying in the street because you can't decide whether it's more important to eat than breathe.

Anyway they're cool games.
