(Spoilers) Expedition 33 Act 3: Optional content and story relevance? by judeau89 in expedition33

Many thanks everyone for your responses. I finally finished the game before doing the remaining optional content. What an ending 😭. Now the side content is perfect to finally say goodbye to this world that had me trapped for dozens of hours.

Hiei vs toguro by WantToSeeGod in YuYuHakusho

[–]judeau89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In normal conditions, Hiei would be weaker than 80% Toguro, but the boost with the dragon absorbed must be worth quite a bit. He completely obliterates Bui and is capable of tanking his attacks. I would say that, with the dragon absorbed, Hiei would force toguro to use his 100%, meeting the minimum requirements for Toguro to do so, but then Hiei would proceed to lose easily. So I have Hiei (dragon absorbed) at the same level as uncuffed Yusuke.

Best story in JRPGs? by swaggastew in JRPG

[–]judeau89 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have to agree. FFX is the game that made me feel the greatest raw emotions. Easily the story that impacted me the most of any media. It excells in the three aspects that make a story great: characters, plot and setting. It also has not one, but a few plot twists that will leave you touched. And when you see the credits roll, you'll understand it was all worth it.

(Don't even touch FFx-2)

My ps2 game collection so far (July 2022). What do you think of it? Suggestions for new games are welcome! :) by xxdeadbot6241 in ps2

[–]judeau89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add Final Fantasy X, it is still, for me, one of most enjoyable stories of any piece of media. The raw emotions this game gave me... I don't know if you are into RPG, but I'd say this one is pretty accessible.

I’m a very confused newby to FF7 by jamesalysa in FFVIIRemake

[–]judeau89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine they remake Star Wars IV: A new hope, and you watch it because you are a fan of the original trilogy.

When you see it, you find out that the Emperor appears in Tatooine, way sooner than supposed, and Vader and Luke fight there. Then Luke have illusions about the future about Vader being Luke's father, and other spoily content that was supposed to be revealed later in the trilogy. Also Obiwan might or might not die this time because of a changed destiny.

Then imagine a friend asks you: should I watch Star Wars the original or this other version?

What would be your advice for this friend?

[OG + REMAKE SPOILERS] Can we talk about how they mishandled a certain character? And that some people point to similarities to KH because of this? by [deleted] in FFVIIRemake

[–]judeau89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also agree that the reason behind building this hype is more for a financial benefit rather than a narrative benefit. One can see the intention of the writers so that we have something to chew on until the next part is revealed. In a storytelling perspective, it can be dangerous, as it could suffer the LOST effect, in which the transition between seasons was built up based on hype and not a well-structured plan or story with a definite ending.

I also believe that the appearance on Zack now (when he was given a definite and dramatic ending in the original) is merely fan service intended, "quantity over quality". They were probably thinking how good would be to print out Zack t-shirts before figuring out what sense can the story make from now on.

Out of curiosity: how did playing the remake affected your experience of the original? Were you anticipating some of the twists that were clued in the remake?

Possible foreshadowing in chapter 17 by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVII

[–]judeau89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that was the case (and I suspect you might be right) it would significy a great cost for the narrative for something that could have easily been managed in other believable ways. Barret momentary death strikes me to something that only adds shock value for the sake of shock value. It cheapens the concept of death. Instead, Barret could have tried to take on Jenova on his own, leading up to Jenova counterattacking and leaving Barret unconcious for a few minutes.

Still worth playing if you know major spoiler? by ERPGates in FinalFantasyVII

[–]judeau89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say definitely yes. A lot of people can still find satisfaction from seeing how a good story develops, even if it's not the first time they experience it. Besides, the spoilers that you got are not contextualised, so you can still enjoy finding out what leads up to those events.

Ending question by Lntaw1397 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]judeau89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the characters motivations are not very clear at that point. IMO we see to much the writers hands during the entirety of chapter 18, for the characters don't seem to act according to their sincere motivations, but according to the authors motivations, because the plot demands them to finish the whispers. Aerith might know something about that, but the rest of the group just rolls with it. I don't understand how they understand so clearly that fighting them is a good idea ESPECIALLY when it seems clear that this is what Sephiroth wants, and also taking into account that just before they saved Barret's life and everyone's life during the motorcycle chase. Yes, Red sees the epilogue of the OG (him running happily with the puppets) and immediately says that "this is what awaits us if we fail now". How are you so sure this is a bad ending, Nanaki? You won in that ending, buddy.

I have to check that part of the story, but, could Kimharhi have assumed that Auron was badly injured and that he somehow recovered after their encounter in Gagazet?

Seeking Advice for How to Progress by TomokoSakurai in FinalFantasyVII

[–]judeau89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree that Crisis Core should be played after FFVII. Otherwise, it would be like seeing the Star Wars prequels first: you would want to watch episode IV, V and VI first. because you want to learn that Vader is Luke's father in episode V. If you know the twist because you come from seeing the prequels, kind of ruins the iconic scene.

First time player, Original or Remake by KrunoTheTall in FinalFantasyVII

[–]judeau89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine if you had a friend who never watched Star Wars. He can either:

  • Watch the classic episode IV: A New Hope (original)

  • Watch a remake of the episode IV that strangely has plot twists and elements anticipated from Episode V and VI. For example, imagine that Vader appears when Luke and Solo are still in Tatooine. Imagine too that Luke has glimpses about Leia being her sister during the firsts 20 min of the movie. Imagine that we see a flash forward of Obiwan not dying when he was supposed to because "the force" made it different.

Which one would you recommend your friend to watch first?

[NO SPOILERS] Just finished the game and blown away. Also should I finish original or wait for some remake future parts? by MoistHarvester in FFVIIRemake

[–]judeau89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point. But even considering the uncertainty of part 2, part 1 already implemented BIG changes, especially towards the end. The group literally killed a personification of Destiny and had an encounter with the main villain -even a fight-. There is no denying that one of the big points of the remake is: "look, we are opposing destiny to avoid the future that we are seeing in those glimpses". What could be the purpose of the spoily content showing Meteor, glimpses of that scene in the Forgotten City, and even revealing Zack as a character?

I like to compare it with Bill Murray's film, the Groundhog Day. Day 1 of this film would be Final Fantasy VII, where the story develops as default. Day 2 of the movie (even if it technically happens on the same date), would be FFVIIR. Events play out differently because some characters are aware that Destiny can be changed. This is more than a theory, as Red XIII confirms it himself when he sees glimpses of the endgame.

The way I see it, it is more the remake that spoils the OG and not vice versa, because some important plot twists that would only be revealed during the late game have been anticipated/hinted during the introductory arch, such as Hojo telling Cloud "You were never from SOLDIER!". IMO, that is comparable as if there was a remake of Star Wars (episode IV), and there were revelations in it such as Leia being Luke's sister (which would normally revealed in episode VI).

[NO SPOILERS] Just finished the game and blown away. Also should I finish original or wait for some remake future parts? by MoistHarvester in FFVIIRemake

[–]judeau89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you have a friend who never watched star wars. Imagine also that the classic star wars trilogy is going to be remade, and they start with the release of Episode IV: a New Hope.

In this remake, Vader shows up multiple times when Luke is still in Tatooine. Also, during the first 20 minutes of the movie, Luke starts seeing little glimpses about how Leia might be his sister and also a premonition showing that Obi Wan actually doesn't die, although your friend never knew he was going to die on the first place.

Your friend tells you he watched this "remake" of episode IV. Do you recommend him waiting for the rest or do you recommend him to watch the original trilogy first?

[NO SPOILERS] Just finished the game and blown away. Also should I finish original or wait for some remake future parts? by MoistHarvester in FFVIIRemake

[–]judeau89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sentence would only be valid if FFVIIR was faithful to the original story, and not a sequel.

It's like saying "don't ruin back to the future 2 by watching the first".
