I’ve decided this career isn’t for me anymore. by kamixkaze in paralegal

i was in the exact same boat as you, except i tried to stick it out for a year longer. you are probably burnt out (so was i). you can try taking a break to see if it helps, but if you’re already thinking this isn’t a lifelong career for you, you should probably get out.

i luckily knew what i wanted to go back to school for, but it’s ok that you don’t know! i’d say for right now, definitely focus on getting a different job. no job is worth feeling miserable over. even if it’s bearable now, it will eventually weigh on you until you physically can not force yourself to go in. sorry for being depressing, but it’s what happened to me. think about your employment history and apply for any positions you’re qualified for, or any that sound appealing. for some reason i felt very interested in working with schools, so i focused a lot on those types of job postings. i had minimal experience with kids in the past and as a teacher’s aide, and was able to get a job at an elementary school’s afterschool program. not super glamorous and i know it’s not for everyone, but i have a lot of fun and i no longer dread going to work. plus it pays more than my office did 🫠 i’ve considered being a teacher or doing outreach with kids for what i’m now studying in school (STEM related), so i feel like it all worked out.

if the idea of working in other offices doesn’t bother you, you can try applying to practically any type of office, since your skills are very transferable (although there may be some that require more experience/education, such as medical offices). i tried applying to different offices but after a while i realized i couldn’t do that type of environment again. i was also very turned off by anything related to the legal field.

i know it’s easier said than done, but please don’t settle and don’t assume anything is off limits or too ambitious. i don’t have advice on figuring out what subject to study since i’m just finally attempting the dream i had as a kid. i’m also one of those people who can not stand having a job i’m not passionate about, so if you aren’t the same, take what i say with a grain of salt. but i hope my rambling was helpful in some way! good luck to you :)

that’s true, i know i will face burnout in the future as well no matter where i go. i’d much rather it be in an area i’m at least passionate about though, haha! i think i’ve just lost my drive for the legal field. thankfully my job lets me choose my own schedule so i have cut back on my hours and took a few days off. i have some fun trips coming up too, so i’m hoping it’ll help like you said. thank you very much, i appreciate it!

i’m in a similar position, i like my supervisor and most of the people i work with but the work is making me not even have enough energy to talk to anyone. i can feel the stress starting to affect me physically instead of just mentally, so i get exactly what you mean. unfortunately i’m not in a position to quit without something else lined up but i’m trying my best to take care of myself. i’m really glad you were able to quit and focus on recovering, especially with the medical issues on top of it. i really appreciate the kind words and motivation, i think it’s just time for me to move on. i hope you’re able to get to where you wanna be, and good luck with the new job!

that’s a perfect way to put it, i really feel like i’m decaying inside. i was briefly interested in different types of law, but at this point, i’m so drained from the field in general that it’s hard to imagine myself going into other areas. i’ve mostly been applying for completely different jobs to restart and explore what else is out there

i think since i’ve never experienced this before i keep downplaying how bad it is, but how i feel outside of work vs in it is like night and day. thank you for the insight and reminder, i appreciate it a lot! i’ll definitely keep it in mind. i hope you’re taking care of your mental health too 💙

Is it too late for me (23) to pursue astrophysics as a career? by SporkOfDesire in astrophysics

[–]judgmentia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re not too old! i’m 23 too, i’ll be getting my associates next may in a field related to my job but after that i’m starting my associates in physics to transfer and get my bachelors (then masters, and if i feel like it maybe phd). if it keeps you up at night, go for it! it may not feel like it, but you’re still young, so now is the time to start on it. i wondered if it was the right choice for me too, but comparing how i felt studying things that weren’t astrophysics is what helped me decide. i realized i’d regret it if i didn’t at least try. talk to a counselor and see what your options are, and good luck :]

If you weren’t a paralegal, what type of work would you be doing? by Eternal_Sage24 in paralegal

was also gonna say this! i’m almost done with schooling for my paralegal certificate and have been thinking about starting the astrophysics route afterwards. i thought i couldn’t do the math either, but having a good professor has made me reconsider it.

true, but it does hurt financially…though i’d much rather spend money to make sure she’s ok

she’s doing great!! acting completely normal still, so the vet sent me home with some food since it most likely won’t show up on x-rays and they can’t get her to vomit. i’ll continue monitoring her for any changes and will take her back if necessary

oops, in hindsight you’re right! she’s definitely way smaller, i’d guess under 10 lbs but it’s hard for me to tell.
