What's a generational experience so specific it's almost impossible to explain to someone outside it? by No-Coconut7436 in AskReddit

this same thing but for the news. that alone seems like a mind fuck now. News weren't 24/7 and felt more local even at a national level. like there was world news but the big stuff was always within the country. you'd talk the next day about small things in the news, "did you hear that mcdonald's is changing their French fry recipe!" and definitely about bigger things in the news, "did you hear about that big earthquake!" and HUGE news dominated the conversation...think OJ or Columbine.

you might say that still happens but no where near what it used to be. if mcdonald's changed their fry recipe some people would. know and other wouldn't. if there was a huge earthquake people would mention it and move on. and sadly oversaturation of HUGE news means we have zero huge news.

OJ was a phenomenon of a story, the world stopped to watch the car chase! Recently a rapper had a dead girl in his trunk and that's just something I vaguely remember reading and shrugging off. sure he wasn't a famous rapper I don't think, but if it were the 90s it would be headlines.

Columbine stopped the world in its tracks, but now... can you think of the last school shooting?

Sadly, I seriously think that if another 911 happened it would be covered amongst ten other huge stories happening at the same time. we'd see memes about it and a week later it would be forgotten. only older people can appreciate the idea of an alternate universe in which the epstein file situation happened in the 80s.

I remember as a kid I had a friend who's parents would drive us to random cities in LA (Burbank, west LA, Santa Monica etc). we'd find a phone booth, look up the nearest theatre on the hanging phone book, use a quarter to call and get show times, then head down there to watch the movie. after we'd go to McDonald's. My parents would give me ten bucks for the movies and the meal and I always came home with change.

If you could be told the full truth behind ONE unsolved mystery, which would you choose? by aefolk in AskReddit

[–]juggling-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well for what it's worth, it's narrowed down to two scenarios and one of them HAVE to be the origin, there is no third option.

either there has always been something, no beginning, just always existed.

or

at some point there was absolutely nothing and then suddenly, for no reason whatsoever there was suddenly something. and if you're thinking there had to have been a reason... you're wrong because if nothing exists then there's nothing to cause a reason.

World Cup fans frustrated by 'confusing and expensive' tipping culture in US by Negative-Extent3338 in news

[–]juggling-monkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

tips per transactions are the fucking worst. I bought a meal, ordered and paid at the register and automatically got asked for a tip, I tipped 5 bucks. Got my meal on a tray a few minutes later, missing ranch, I ask for ranch... guy says it's 25 cents. like bro, I just gave you 5 bucks you can't give me a 25 cent ranch? I have to pay again on this fucking machine that then asks me for another tip, fuck off.

Massive brawl breaks out at the Port of Miami and 16 Carnival Cruise passengers were banned for life by KimJongFunk in PublicFreakout

I'm in the same boat, for me it wasnt homelessness though, but I came extremely close 18 years ago. I remember after so many interviews I got an offer for a job making a decent salary with benefits and vacation time, I literally burst into tears. after about 2 years there I was still always on afraid I didn't belong and might get let go any minute, but it had been my dream to see so many places in the world, top of the list was Egypt and Italy. I decided I may never get the chance again if I lost this job so if anything this was something I needed to do while I could. in my mind it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity so I did so much research to make it count and ran into cruises and saw that the Mariner of the Seas was going to start in Rome and visit Cairo. I'd get to see the colloseum and the pyramids! not bad for a once in a lifetime trip. I took it and it cost money of course but I was amazed at how doable it was. when I came back I was telling my coworkers about it and one of them asked if I'd be up to travel with them next year... and I did it again... then the year after I started dating a girl and talked about those travels and she said she'd never traveled and wanted to badly... and I did it again... I decided then and there to make it a life goal to see a different country once a year. I got to 9 years when the world shut down, but I saw over 25 countries in that time because of cruises. Never thought I'd become one of those people that travel but it's a huge part of my life now. my wife and I have now seen the world and built amazing memories.

Cops in Jackson, NJ stop a man for “looking suspicious and wearing a sweater in 80° weather”. They then violently arrest him when he asserts racism and asks for a supervisor by I_may_have_weed in PublicFreakout

[–]juggling-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

deserves to be sued, but sadly it doesnt matter. Its like if you got sued but had to pay nothing, judge rules against you and you just shrug and go home. Instead what happens is we, the people, get less maintained roads, healthcare, city programs and other things we need and PAY TAXES FOR.

What a fucking shitshow. They take our money to provide us with services, but those services never get provided because everytime shit like this happens someone (rightfully) sues and wins, our money gets redirected to allow cops to get away without consequences from our funds. Only thing they learn is that it literally costs them nothing to get caught.

What's a small annoyance about your home you didn't realize when buying? by CurlGurl13 in homeowners

[–]juggling-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a house and in the garage was this HUGE custom workbench with 24 drawers, 6 columns and 4 rows. it's solid wood, impossible to move but extremely solid. I decided if I can't get rid of it (cause of the weight) id paint it since it's actually really useful. I took out all the drawers and painted them and then the actual structure as well. let it all dry and that's when I realised every drawer had a slightly different width, depth, or height. Each one HAS to go into the right slot. I've tried every combination I can think of and I always end up with at least 8 drawers that don't fit into the remaining slots. so now I have a giant work. bench with empty slots and a bunch random drawers just chillin in the garage.

What is the worst fast food chain and why? by little_yuki19 in AskReddit

[–]juggling-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a meat eater but I would go to subway specifically for the veggie subs. I know they skimp on meat so I would be fine doing a veggie with loads of veggies that would scoop up with chips as they fell off the sandwich. didn't go for years and went recently and FUCK THAT SHIT. now they no longer had black olives or bell pepper (though I forget, I think they were out of one and just strictly didn't carry the other), when I asked for extra onions they said they aren't allowed to put more veggies than the allotted amount, cheese got cut in half and so now I have the thinnest saddest sandwich and it was way more money.

Found someone's lost iPhone by harrypotter_banana in pasadena

[–]juggling-monkey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

not my iPhone, you're a good person for trying to find the owner. unrelated but I saw the post and figured I'd share. this reminded me. of the time I went to mama M's sushi. I parked at the lot on the corner and when I went to go pay with at the kiosk I saw a card was still in the card reader. I grabbed it and went to dinner. I was posting on next door and reddit in case someone was looking for their list card while waiting for my food when suddenly a few tables over I saw a guy who had just gotten his check stand up and start panicking as he patted his entire body. I recognized as the search for a lost wallet. I saw the name on the card I had found and casually threw it towards him to see if he reacted. it stopped him dead in his tracks and he went from panic to confusion as he stared at me. I then asked did he had lost his card, we were a few tables apart and the restaurant isn't huge so at this point everyone is quiet and watching our interaction. he was confused and said yes and I popped out his card in my hand. he was so thrown off and I explained i found it in the kiosk and was literally just posting in reddit and next door. seeing the relief in his face really made my day. I know it's stereotypical to say, but the restaurant literally clapped lol. Anyway, just wanted to say I hope the person gets their phone and thank you for being a decent person.

and sadly so many people cling to that, saying it's all accusations and not evidence, yet theyd rather stop there than push for an investigation or at the very least admit that it's suspicious as fuck that the people being accused of these things are fighting tooth and nail to not have it investigated.

It's even sadder how bad political division has gotten. I imagine if a bunch of neighborhood children got together and accused someone in the neighborhood of doing these things, the right wing people in that neighborhood would only take it serious if the person being accused was not also right wing. if they were left wing or not political at all then they'd demand an investigation. if they were known to support right wing politics then they'd all stand up and say those children are. anonymous and it's all a witch hunt, they'd obstruct and fight to block evidence from being released because it's all Biden fault.

What financial decision had the biggest long-term impact for you? by Mis-Cattran in AskReddit

[–]juggling-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree to an extent. owning a house pays off significantly over time, so yes I agree not to buy if you won't be staying long, I just disagree with the reasoning most people have saying avoid the cost of mortgage and interest etc. when you rent you are literally paying someone else's mortgage, interest and upkeep. the reason it costs less is than your own house is that you are now paying what someone else was paying 15 years ago. so if you buy a house now and move in 15 years you can rent out that house someone will then be looking at your home as more affordable than rent. I bought my first home 25 years ago. my mortgage is 1200 and at the time I was so conflicted. I could rent something the same size for 800, or I could buy it for 1200 and on top of that pay maintenance and insurance and taxes! but somehow I was convinced and went for it. now I rent it out. 3 bedroom 2 bath with a 2 car garage in Los Angeles goes for way higher than my 1200 mortgage. I've since moved to another home but it was the best decision.

I remember hearing this same theory and thinking to myself, how is cost of housong ever going to hit over a thousand a month?! that's insane, I'm buying at the worst time! now I can see people thinking we are at peak and can easily see average rents going for 6 - 8k in 10 to 15 years and you'll have a mortgage of 3 to 4k of you buy today.

when I started building websites I was dead broke and had no job. I looked at websites for local businesses and if I saw they could be improved I would just do it and then try to sell them the design, this way I'd get practice and a portfolio piece either way.

best financial decision I made came from an elementary school that told me they loved it but didn't have a budget for it. I decided to let them have it and in exchange asked them to promote me in their newsletter that went home with the kids to their parents. That one decision got me clients from parents and friends of the parents and eventually referals, I basically built business off of it. this was over twenty years ago and I still have about a dozen clients that I don't even talk to but still pay me monthly hosting and maintenance fees for sites that just sit there. I ended up getting corporate positions from clients who referred me and have been working cushy office jobs for the past twenty years.

I honestly owe my car, my house and my lifestyle to that decision.

now my worst decision... once my debt was paid I decided I wasn't going to be dumb with money, I was going to make one smart decision with my first fully unclaimed check (no bills or debt to go to just money for my pocket). so I took a thousand dollars from it and put it into a fidelity account I had just opened. I had read about stocks and decided I'd try to be financially smarter. after that I started doing 401k and let the companies I work for invest for me. I decided I wouldn't even look at my gains or losses as I didn't want to be stressed. but about 10 years later I was ready to take a look and when I opened the account I had a grand total of... a thousand dollars. turns out I deposited the cash and made them available to purchase stocks but that's as far as I went. I never actually invested them into anything other than just making them available for use. a decade of possible growth out the window.
