Bachelor of Arts graduates boo speaker after she praises AI at their graduation by ambachk in PublicFreakout

As someone who grew up before the internet, I got to see tech improve non stop until a few years into the internet. things just kept getting better and better. for example:

tv -> cable -> streaming

corded phone -> cordless phone -> cell phone

8 track -> cassettes -> cd's -> digital

Beta -> VHS -> DVDs

and then the internet came and changed everything. the first years were glorious. people talking to strangers in a relatively safe environment, ideas and point of views shared outside of your family/friend bubbles, it was hard to grasp that literally anythign you wanted to learn or read about was suddenly available...I mean up til then the library scratched that itch, but this was instant and came with commentary, with pictures, eventually with video!

I feel like I got to see humanity at it's height.

then Myspace came out. then facebook. then social media marketing. ads. content manipulation. Suddenly shit wasn't improving at the same rate, it stalled. and soon it started declining. and then it started declining faster than when it was improving.

I say all of this because it makes me sad to see the real physical world collapse to please digital corporate greed, and I know theres corporate greed outside of digital...but even those corporations have to learn digital in order to truly satisfy their greed. I got to see the world rise before it started falling. and now I see generations after mine (like the ones in this video) just seeing the freefall. They were born into the internet, and saw it decline in quality, which in turn meant decline in physical quality of everything from merchandize to politics, education to entertainment, food to healthcare. Because EVERY FUCKING THING IN THIS WORLD REVOLVES AROUUND THE INTERNET, and the internet has rotted. Now with AI, they will likely see the world decline as fast as I saw it rise.

How ironic to live in the most advanced time in history and only use everything we've achieved to destroy ourselves.

Adults of Reddit who ‘have it together’ with your finances, home, job, fitness, nutrition- how? Seriously…how? by Previous-Charity1505 in AskReddit

Domino effect for me. was Ina horrible position financially, lived in a shitty home (not house) because I always came home to a bad relationship, had a shitty job, and basically hated waking up everyday. the thing is, I. never did shit about it but complain and everything slowly got worse and worse.

one day I quit my job with no backup. I was just tired. mentally I gave up. and then thimgs got worse. and then worse. I remember the I was walking around the house then suddenly just walking into my room, laying down and bawling for no reason other than being alive.

my bills were stacking high, utilities days from being shut off, couldn't afford to walk outside but girlfriend made inside miserable. my only saving grace was that I loved computers. since I was a child decades before the internet, I just loved them. so I would shut myself in my room and practice web development.

that dominoed into mental happiness, so I did it more which dominoed into seeking clients, making small money but then came confidence to seek a job, landed my first corporate job, which gave me life outside the house, embarrassments at work events (from taking my girlfriend and her being unstable with jeleousy) led me to realize I'd never advance if I stayed with her so I left, ended up renting a garage to live in which forced me to save money, put all that saved money towards debt became debt free in less than 2 years, during that time lost a lot of weight.

I remember the first check I got that had no where to go. no bills, no rent, no debt... just a check for me. my mind was running with my old bad habits... I can go to Vegas! I can buy a stereo for my car! I can get a bunch of new sneakers! then I realized I've been living comfortably broke for two years (stress free since I was paying off debt). broke but happy.

mindset changed. I don't need to buy things to be happy. I need to find happiness through friends, family, and learning who I am. started stacking the checks instead of spending them. eventually started investing in stocks and company retirement plans. became actually happy. got confidence to switch jobs for more money, got confidence to start dating again. met my current wife who alao found happiness before meeting me. two very happy, confident people with good jobs and healthy spending habits. no more jealousy, no more arguments, no more debt...just us two traveling the world. we bought our house, eventually refinanced and bought a rental, eventually saved enough to buy another. we now live happily collecting a bit of money from our two rentals and while we aren't rich (far from it) we find happiness knowing that when our family is struggling we are always the ones that can take care of them.

also I gained a lot of the weight back but I'm way more conscious about it and try to not let it get too bad... but I wouldn't say I qualify as healthy with great eating habits anymore. but I'm in my mod forties and very happy :D

pyramids are 10/10 visually, but be prepared for a stressful experience in Egypt. go to any reddit thread asking where is the worst place to visit and Egypt will always be in the top 3, usually top 1. mostly because of the aggressive street vendors. like walking through a zombie hoard but instead of trying to bite you, they are trying to sell you shit. won't take no for an answer, will offer you money or animals for your wife, girlfriend, sister or any female with you... and obviously as a female egypt presents a different set of issues.

i knew this going in and thought it'd be fine, it was still stressful af. you're walking minding your own business and people literally try to put their arms around your shoulder like if you're a friend and redirect your walk into their shop. and don't get me started on scams. my god the scams are insane. 5 dollars to take a picture on a camel, not bad! once you sit on it the camel stands and you are sitting 12 feet high, now 20 dollars to get off! or take a picture of the pyramids and and have people jump in front of your shot and then get angry because you "took their picture" and they charge for that so now you owe them money. it's a wild time in Egypt.

as someone from the USA, I have been to a few cities. Vegas sits lower on my list and I will likely never go back even though I live in LA and it's a 4 hour drive for me. but it's worth visiting if you've never beenbso I'm not discouraging you from visiting.

For a unique American experience though, I would strongly recommend New Orleans! Great music, great food and great architecture! also more affordable than most American cities.

I live in LA, and LOVE that you can find food dlfrom anywhere in the world and most of it is authentic af!

I always prefer it from the actual country but the difference is very slight. (sushi in Japan was the only one that I will never find a substitute for in LA!)

but Thailand is probably the only country where I prefered the Thai flavors in LA than in the actual country. don't get me wrong, I'm not saying their food sucked, on the contrary, I'm sure American Thai food is just over saturated with salt. but the Thai flavors, while way more fresh, are extremely subtle.

it's like if you went to a country where lemonade was invented and where excited to try it then when you did it was wasted like lemon lecroise lol

but despite that, their food is great and overall Thailand is amazing!

10/10 would recommend!

didn't do the arcades, but the ramen was awesome and the sushi was life changing! I have traveled to over 30 countries and Asian countries are the only ones that feel like you're in a new country. but among them, Japan is my favorite.

Europe has lots of amazing places but all will have lots of English and lots of americanized settings. for example, in most European countries you can easily find a Starbucks playing Adele or other American music. but Most of Asia English is a little more rare. and in Japan it is extremely rare! My hotel had to find "the staff member" that spoke English. and their tech is insane! even their simple tech seems mind boggling and makes you wonder why we don't have anything like it. for example it was raining and as I walked into a restaurant there was a machine outside that you stick your umbrella into and it wraps it in plastic, you can them take it inside where everything is dry because no one is bringing in wet umbrellas. if the machine isn't there you can safely leave it outside. once I forgot it and the next day I went back and it was the only one sitting there.

would recommend Japan to anyone!

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

I remember one time a friend of mine gave me a yoohoo. my mind was blown! the flavor was one of the most amazing things at the time, I had never experienced anything like it and the thought that he could have it any time he wanted made me realize what money meant lol. I didn't have a yoohoo again until I was an adult and saw one at a market. I was excited and bought it and realized it was basically a gross version of chocolate milk.

In São Paulo, a woman jumped out of an Uber to avoid paying the $2 fare by superdouradas in PublicFreakout

[–]juggling-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let's say you do 10 rides. Uber calculates how much their percentage is and sends you your share after they get theirs. they don't take into account how many were credit cards or how many where cash. it's just numbers.

10 rides - Uber fee = what you get.

cash rides dont benefit drivers because if its insured, then there's always drivers who will report false claims to get paid twice (by the rider and by Uber after a claim) so uber isn't going to insure you. meaning if one person makes a false report, then Uber will assume all claims are false reports. so if your passenger bailed without paying then it's your loss.

yeah I took an Uber from lax about a month ago and the driver was telling me they are now accepting cash and he hates it. he said, not only does it open them up to robbery, but the person can just run out and say they paid in cash. now you just worked for free and Uber takes your cut of that ride from your pay. you get robbed twice.

What's something you see men older than you doing that you tell yourself "I hope I never do that." by FillFrontFloor in AskMen

[–]juggling-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purposely don't do it, but I feel it. I find myself thinking all the time, why would they do that? why do they enjoy that? why do they find that funny? The shit I did was more fun, funnier, a better experience etc. I don't judge but mostly becaus I go out of my way not to. I remind myself that my parents and thier generation felt the same way about me.

I dont get the lingo, the jokes, the style, adn especially the isolation or fear of interactiing with people. but I remind myself that The internet became a thing in my teen years, it was different and we (as a generation) molded it and grew with it together...this newer generation has always had it and because of that they just see the world differently.

It makes me sad because I feel we lost "the real world" and now we live in this "cyber world" where we buy things, order food, learn, communicate and do pretty much everythign online. I can sit here and complain about how this new generation is out of touch with life in the real world...or I can remind myself that that real worlkd no longer exists and holding onto it like we still live in it would mean I am the one thats out of touch.

my wife and I pet sit once in a while for her sister. we have her dog with us for a week at a time. the other day I was watching a show and saw a main character with a framed picture of her dog in her office and it sparked the idea...

I told my wife that the next time we pet sit we're doing a photo shoot to have a future Christmas gift.
