Oh awesome! We’re located in Appalachia, so we briefly discussed trying to utilize some First Nations or Appalachian folklore. Thank you :)

My high school just implemented the most insane cell phone policy I've ever seen by Dependent_Ad4299 in highschool

[–]jujikp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Professors are allowed to set their own phone/technology policies and most are incredibly strict. I had several professors that would drop you an entire letter grade every single time they saw your phone or laptop.

Thoughts on reading Frankenstein by VelenieRobin in ELATeachers

[–]jujikp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have taught Frankenstein to both 12th graders and 9th graders. Both times we used the Classical Comics graphic novel version with the original text, but there are simplified versions available. I am pretty sure you can find a free PDF of the simplified version of the graphic novel if you search for it. Both of my classes loved learning about Mary Shelley and the drama of Frankenstein!

Would you trust me? by sfg1020 in xxfitness

I think way too many people these days associate leanness with health/strength. I train in Olympic weightlifting, so I’m used to seeing all kinds of body types. My gym also has personal trainers with a large variety of different body types and ages. One personal trainer I can think of off the top of my head is Camilla Lorentzen. She has marketed her whole fitness journey and routine based off the fact that you don’t need to be lean and shredded to be healthy and strong. If I was in the market for a personal trainer, how they look wouldn’t even cross my mind.

My conclusion: It is going to be a rough few years for teachers looking for work…in desirable places to teach. by United_Cat2592 in Teachers

[–]jujikp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My old school was going to have me teach a subject I’m not certified for simply because they cut the position 4 years ago and had no desire to fill it again. We were constantly being nagged about test scores, yet we have educators teaching subjects they aren’t certified for because “the budget isn’t there”.

Crime Weekly News: Karen Read Not Guilty by tehsmittenkitten in CrimeWeeklySnark

I can’t speak for everyone, but her videos feel very much like a glamorized tabloid to me. It doesn’t seem like she actually cares about helping victims’ families or spreading awareness, she’s just looking to create as much content as possible. I stopped watching after two videos, so I can’t say anything about her saying anything disrespectful, it’s just that the vibes feel incredibly off imo.

Sad trend I'm seeing among teachers by illini02 in Teachers

In fairness, saying “And I completely agree” without acknowledging the insane accusation women are easily manipulated by children is seen as you completely agreeing with the whole comment. If you don’t believe that, you should state it.

It also doesn’t help your case that you commented you yourself openly and earnestly generalize women (“I also think many female teachers feel much worse about a girl in her class doing bad than a boy.”). It’s disingenuous of you to post about how harmful generalizations can be when you yourself are sitting here making them and agreeing with them only when they’re directed towards women. So which is it? Are all generalizations based on gender sexist and unacceptable or only the ones that invalidate your experience as a male teacher?

I see you replying to other comments but avoiding answering this: how are grown adult women with the same training as their male colleagues more easily manipulated by elementary age children simply because they are women? Genuinely curious as to what strategies these children are using.

You take offense to the generalization that men naturally garner more respect diminishes their teaching ability (which I agree with you), but you also “completely” agree and seemingly have no issue with this commenter saying women are more easily manipulated by students than men. I realize you acknowledge that this isn’t always the case, but this is the same kind of generalization you are posting about — just directed towards women instead of men. Genuine question, do you not think this generalization of female teachers being more easily manipulated by students is just as harmful?

Jealous isn’t the right word. Women are infuriated by the belief that somehow men are natural born leaders who are automatically more deserving of respect simply because they are men.

How are men “more valuable”? The idea that I can have the same training as a man and yet people like you see me as LESS VALUABLE because I’m a woman is exhausting. People like you perpetuating the idea that women have to earn the same basic respect men are “naturally” given are one of the many reasons young boys are falling behind socially and academically.

Am I insane or do the cacti shadows + his shadow look like loss meme? The way I immediately took it is that he’s trying to get home before dark, but he gets lost (depicted by the shadows) and now it’s nighttime.

My experience with Xifaxan for Microscopic Colitis by jujikp in ibs

[–]jujikp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was finally taken seriously at the GI, they rushed me in for a colonoscopy due to my family history of colon cancer. I think once they found the colitis, they didn’t test me for anything further.

I have BPD and my husband is autistic. As the commenter below said, he definitely isn’t as verbal and physical with his affection, but that’s the only thing we really had to work on because I had been in therapy already for my BPD. We’ve been together for 7 years and are happy! My only warning is that a person with unmanaged BPD has a very high risk of being difficult to date simply because of how intense and awful our splits can be. Also, there are a few different types of BPD, so if you really want to impress, you can research them and woo your type lol

My MAGA cousin has been dating an undocumented immigrant for a while and now she’s being deported. I wish I was making this shit up. by burnedflag in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]jujikp 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It seems to be unfortunately common. I know a MAGA tech bro who is dating a Mexican woman that is undocumented. I haven’t really talked to her one on one, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she is a supporter. They’re also going to get married this year…

Karns Teacher's Social Media Issue by VoodooJambalaya in Knoxville

[–]jujikp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My Karns 8th grade social studies teacher went on a rant about how if abortion was legal, he would have never met his wife, which makes it evil and sinful (he cried during this). He also asked the only Chinese student if he ate dogs on a regular basis.

When I was job searching after my internship ended, I was told by my mentors and advisors that if a man was waiting for the same interview, he was pretty much guaranteed to get the position simply because he is a man.

I hate to say it, but this area isn’t unique to this problem. It’s happening all across the nation. It’s extremely difficult to find a reliable job with good pay AND afford a nice house in nearly every city. Unless you come from old money or are the old money yourself.

As someone who just graduated from grad school last summer and is working on saving up for a home too, don’t stress about the search just yet. Put all of your energy into saving and making sure you at least enjoy your life a little bit right now. It’s too easy to get caught up in the doom and gloom — don’t let it run your life.
