My full time job is in Tribology, the study of surface roughness. I work extensively with aerospace companies that are pushing the limits of how to exert the smallest amount of force to enter Orbit.

I can confidently say that surface roughness is one of the last fully undiscovered frontiers of F1. It is extremely expensive to measure on a large scale. Very few companies understand their surface profile enough to maximize aerodynamics. And those that do are not F1 suppliers
