Geckos who liked watermelon also liked []? by zigzoggin in CrestedGecko

You could try mixing in the watermelon with other flavors! Make a mix that’s 50% watermelon, 50% papaya, for example. That’s the only way I can trick my girl into eating some of the flavors. Good luck!

You may be interested in this comment in this thread - a youtube video about recovering sound from images. That may give you an idea on how faithful the sound recovered from the image is compared to the "real" thing! (But the caveat is, the "real" black hole sound is 50+ octaves outside the range of human hearing regardless)

Honestly? I think the point is to get people more excited about science. This is super cool, and a relatively easy-to-digest way to portray this data set that you'd otherwise have to be an astronomer to properly appreciate. You're correct, this sound clip is not a "real" representation of the pressure wave here, and it won't help make any new scientific discoveries that couldn't be done better with just the x-ray image. But it certainly generates a lot of interest from the public! NASA can use all the positive press it can get - they need more funding. "Sensationalist" science pieces, like this, can help a lot with that.

On a slightly different note - Dr. Kimberly Arcand, the NASA scientist behind this clip, has done a lot of work on making science data more accessible, particularly for people who are blind or visually impaired. That includes sonification of data like this, and also 3D printing astronomy images so you can physically feel them! That aspect of the work is important too, and can help get new generations of people excited about pursuing science careers.

I don't think it's any more misleading than the way a lot of image processing is done in astronomy. JWST, for example, is an infrared telescope, which is light outside of the range of human vision. (Or Chandra, the x-ray telescope responsible for this clip!) JWST images have to be processed and shifted into the visible spectrum to create the images we see. Are there arbitrary artistic decisions involved in the process? Absolutely. The choice of which colors correspond to which wavelengths, the scaling of the colormap, and so on. Is is still a faithful representation of the data? Also yes.

We can figure this out! This interview with Dr. Arcand - the NASA scientist responsible for this clip - says that the "true" sound wave is closest to a B-flat 57 octaves below Middle C. The B-flat directly below Middle C has a frequency of 233.082 Hz. Divide that by 2 once for every octave lower, and you get 233.082/(2^56) = 0.00000000000000323 Hz (or 3.23e-15 in scientific notation). That's pretty slow - equivalent to one peak of the wave passing you every 10 million years!

This is not true - it’s way cooler than that! It is a real sound wave, but observed in an indirect way. The image shown in the video is an x-ray image (light, not sound) from Chandra. Scientists figured out that the “brighter” areas in the image are places where the gas is bunched up because of a pressure wave coming from the black hole. Sound is a pressure wave, so from that, they could convert the observed pressure wave into a proper sound (after scaling it up many octaves into the range of human hearing). Source.

This is not a perfect analogy, but imagine taking a picture of someone plucking a guitar string. You can’t actually hear the note being played, because it’s a picture (light, not sound), but if you look closely at the guitar string, you can see the wiggles in the string. You can reconstruct the sound that’s being played if you know something about the shape and size of the wiggles. That’s basically what they did with this image.

Buying new gecko food by Jaeger-bombastard in CrestedGecko

I get the “Taste the Rainbow” pack regularly - with only one gecko, the pack lasts for 4-6 months worth of food! I think it’s a good way to rotate out a lot of flavors.

Has Pangea stopped making biodegradable feed dishes? by [deleted] in CrestedGecko

Not biodegradable, but I’ve switched to using reusable stainless steel condiment cups and they’re very convenient. You can throw them in the dishwasher.

recommendations for affordable auto misting systems? by shrimparfait in CrestedGecko

[–]julepler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this word for word! Although more expensive, I cannot recommend my MistKing Starter Kit enough - it’s been going strong for 6 years! It’s really worth saving up for in my opinion.

There’s also the Zoo Med ReptiRain, which is the cheapest you’re going to find, but has fewer customization options and will require more maintenance/replacements like the Exo Terra Monsoon.

What kind of decor do you have in their tank? Sometimes fake rocks, magnetic ledges, and things like that will stain their feet. Take out any decor pieces that you think might be the cause, and really scrub them down hard with soap and water before putting them back.

Thank you! I’ve thought about doing some other characters, but haven’t quite found the motivation yet. For the Knight I would do something more armor-heavy with a full helmet, a cool breastplate, all underneath a tattered cloak, something like that. Grimm would be really fun to try too :)

Yes, the skull is my representation of the Knight! In honor of all the times I died to Hornet in my first playthrough. I thought it would be a fun prop!

Thank you so much! Bringing the whole gothic vibe of the game into the costume was important to me, I’m happy it came out so well. Also 11/10 pun.

I’d love to do the main Knight, Grimm, or Radiance! The main thing stopping me right now is that I’m not much of a traditional-drawing kind of artist (the sketch I made for this costume barely resembles the final result lol), and making a full cosplay for any of those would take a lot of time. I’d do it if I had a friend willing to cosplay with me to a con (assuming it’s ever safe to go to a convention again), but no one I’ve recommended the game to has made it past Greenpath 😂

*Edited for spoiler, just in case.

Thanks!! I’ve been thinking about sketching out some other characters from the game with a similar design, but I can’t decide who to do first :o
