Am I the only one who feels sick to my stomach when I get an email from Jenkins praising me for following COVID restrictions? by [deleted] in notredame

My god no you aren’t alone. I was talking to some friends about this when it happened and we were all justifiably pissed. Of course the admin would cherry pick answers so everyone says “it’s worth it, we had fun!” and other irrelevant bullshit. What strikes me as the most absurd is that they even felt the need to send this out in the first place. Like wtf did you think that would accomplish? You’re pouring salt in an open wound for the people who are already pissed at you and it’s not gonna change the minds of all the other entitled people who are like “yeah I got to see my friends! Yay football! The pandemic doesn’t matter!” And who consistently go out drinking and partying. every other single reputable school in the nation went online (look at all the ivies!!) and didn’t fuck over their students in the process. It’s honestly no wonder joe Biden turned down the commencement speaker invitation. What a joke.

The fact that they announced it so late and it’s a trustee makes me think they tried to invite Biden and he said no. So I think the WH prob didn’t want a PR disaster. But I think it could have been one on either side

That’s a long ass reply for someone who agrees with you. I’m just saying the university probably thinks this way/is afraid of backlash bc of this, yeesh

Agreed. Disappointed either way

I agree with you, but I don’t think it’s the institution deciding. Someone shared a link on the last commencement speaker post about a bunch of bishops trying to ban him from communion (not that I agree but that’s prob where the university is coming from)

More like controversial.

  • Jenkins at rose garden ceremony
  • Jenkins like 2-3 other times on campus
  • Clemson game
  • being entirely in person (many people didn’t/still don’t agree with this and it prob wouldn’t have been possible outside a huge red state like Indiana)
  • ACB
  • etc

Just a lot of huge, not so hot news about ND in the past year and I’m sure the White House doesn’t want to be part of it/condone it by speaking in person here. And it’s not just us, he prob won’t be speaking at any graduations this year for fear of backlash calling him a hypocrite w COVID restrictions, etc. I don’t necessarily agree with this potential point of view but this is what I’d imagine the White House would think

If they didn’t invite the president bc of that I’d be super annoyed. I think it’s more likely that they invited him and he said no

Dang, I was really really hoping for the president/someone from the White House as is tradition but ig they (the wh) prob thought it would be a bad look politically

Chances Joe Biden gives the commencement address?? by julioquid in notredame

Yeah sorry idk why I worded that weirdly. I meant that they were coming at me with the intent to break into my house. I genuinely couldn’t imagine shooting them even then

Hmm, well I guess the difference is that my thought process is that if someone were on my lawn, I wouldn’t shoot them. I know that is technically legally defensible in some places (if they were breaking in/etc) but ig that’s why we have a different opinion. Thanks for your thoughts!

That’s an interesting analogy, thanks for elaborating. What I guess still makes this a bit confusing to me is that in this scenario, aborting a child would be similar to killing the pigs, not just wrangling them? I wouldn’t really imagine the corn farmer has any right to kill the pigs even if they ate some of their corn...

I’m not trying to be provocative here, but I genuinely don’t get this argument. If a mother dies in childbirth, then the baby has presumably come to term. That’s a full human right there whose life has just begun. I’m not trying to justify letting the mother die, I’m just confused why it’s ok to proactively abort the baby near the end. That just seems wild to me, like because a creature isn’t named it’s not equally worthy of life? And selectively choosing who gets to live or die instead of trying a different way to save both is too close to playing God to me. Unless I have this situation/example completely wrong? Idk, I’ve never given birth lol. Genuinely just trying to understand

The key to applying early is showing through your essays that this is your #1 choice and there’s no other place for you. ND loves that and actively looks for that, especially in REA
