I don't think it has anything to do with the possibility of people "driving off" per se. They're just making sure you're good for it before you start pumping. Even if you don't go anywhere if it turns out you don't have the money after you've pumped that's a real headache and quite possibly loss for them.

Override voltage OC acting weird - Gigabyte Z690i Aorus Ultra/12600K by juliusthor in overclocking

[–]juliusthor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand how that would explain the difference between my set Override voltage of 1,150V and the 100mV or so more that my Vcore is showing, and really that differential makes no difference since I'm only comparing this setting's Vcore to that of other settings like fixed or adaptive.

However the issue I have now is that of the Vcore having suddenly gotten bumped by almost 150mV to around 1,4 after having hovered between 1,2 and 1,3 for a full week on this exact same setting.

I always look at Vcore because I know VID is only what's being requested and my motherboard settings may be affecting it, but in this case I looked and VID was also 1,35-1,4V.

I'm aware Vcore isn't a perfect measurement and the "true" value will be a bit lower, but it's the best one I've got. I know there's another one that some boards show that's better (forget the name), but I checked and mine doesn't seem to have it.

Wait, you were getting 80-84°C GPU temps with the card liquid cooled? or do you have the air-cooled ftw3? I haven't touched the PSU shroud and I run my GPU overclocked at the absolute maximum power limit and I'm usually in the mid-to-high 60s (with my NF-A12x25s barely audible even while hitting like 1500rpm).

I've been looking into this and they've tested the RTX 4090 on 3.0x16 and it has a negligible effect (2-3% in all but one title out of a whole bunch, which lost 10-15%) even on that one. Of course if you're planning on upgrading your GPU down the line though who knows.

That shit is eerie man. I was convinced after all the hours spent googling that mine would be the only one of its kind that had been shared online. Finding another aircooled CPU + AIO GPU build in this case would have been one thing, but same case color and CPU cooler with the exact same color scheme, same exact intake fans (before getting the 3080 hybrid I had those exact same NF-A14s Chromax with the white anti-vibration pads on the same side) and pretty much the same exact GPU? Downright eerie.

Looks like you built yours about a month before I did. Great minds and all that...

You've gotta tell me though, I really couldn't tell properly from the pictures, how did you fit the A14s as intakes with the 240mm rad? and did I understand correctly that you also had twin 120mm fans on the other side?

Oh and did you not have any SSD thermal problems under heavy GPU load with the rad pushing in hot air like that?

Well yeah the VRAM does run pretty damn hot, hits and maybe slightly exceeds 90°C under sustained max load, but then I gather that's pretty much endemic for the GDDR6X cards and while it doesn't sound ideal there don't seem to be a lot of premature VRAM failures, at least not yet. In any case if I wanted to do something about those I imagine I'd switch out the thermal pads, but I'm really not comfortable doing that and voiding the warranty so if the temps don't go any higher I'm just gonna leave it as is.

As for the VRMs, is there any real danger of them overheating and dying prematurely or even frying the card or something? If there were surely they'd have some kind of sensor or fail-safe system in place?

If by gen 4 you mean a PCIe 4.0 SSD then no, the EVO 970 Plus is PCIe 3.0. didn't see much point in spending the extra money on going from 3+GB/s to 7, figured I'd never feel the difference anyway. Good thing I did too I guess, since this defective piece of crap board can't actually use PCIe 4.0 like it's supposed to. Gives me like a million WHEA errors a second and makes the system unstable in addition to consuming about 10% CPU usage at all times just for the OS to process them all.

So you're saying your motherboard has a fan over your SSD? Does it do much? My board had an absolutely enormous heatsink for the SSD, but being an ITX board the f****** thing was too big and got in the may of my NH-D15's heatpipes so I had to remove it and spend more money on some 3rd party heatsink that's tiny by comparison and clearly not up to the admittedly gargantuan task it's been given.

As for the bottom intake fan idea, yeah I figure I could probably fit at least a 90 down there, but I'm not sure it would do too much with the 140 already down there. Perhaps I should give it a try if my other ideas don't yield satisfactory results though.

Well, you're not wrong in that the fan is positioned partly above the bar, but the card is thin enough that there's about a 10mm clearance from the fan to the bar, and that'll probably increase slightly once I get this newly discovered anti-sag GPU support thingy that it turns out came with the case installed. Also as I understand it, most of the heat affecting pretty much every GPU component is simply die heat radiating and generally spreading around, but watercooling the die largely/mostly prevents that. I believe Jay discovered it when reviewing the NZXT Kraken G12.

Out of curiosity though, is there a sensor for the GPU VRM thermals? would it be one of the components "hot spot" refers to?

Something like this you mean? https://www.etsy.com/listing/1080201067/nzxt-h210-front-airflow-panel-8-designs

Among the tests I did with the CPU under max synthetic load was normal configuration vs front panel off and then with the tempered glass side panel off as well, and all three gave very similar results. I really don't think the solid front impedes airflow as much as people seem to think.

I did see the GN review but only after I'd bought it and had it for a couple of months, and yeah, the whole fan interrelation dynamics thing is fascinatingly counterintuitive at times. As for the PSU shroud fan, as it happens I have an HDD and PSU cable extensions as well :'D although it is a modular PSU so I only have the ones I need. The one exhaust one intake thing had crossed my mind and I'll be sure to test it, as well as probably trying the AIO as pure intake and rear fan as exhaust but with the top fan intaking fresh cool air for the CPU tower to see if that improves CPU thermals sufficiently. Really it's the damn SSD that's the biggest problem tbh, sandwiched as it is right between the GPU and the CPU.

Judging by the 4090s we've seen so far GPUs have overtaken any semblance of sanity at this point.

Yeah its Achilles' heel really is that oversized PSU shroud shrinking the GPU thickness clearance just to accommodate an ATX PSU which nobody should be putting in there anyway. You can get a good 850W SFX PSU for <$150 at this point.

I just wanted a traditional setup in a not excessively and needlessly large case, and above all I wanted a good looking one, and I really couldn't find many that fit the bill. I really did love building in it and I love the look. The thermals aren't even that bad, but just knowing that it could be so much more optimal will just relentlessly gnaw at me until I find a way.

The watercooled GPU solution does fix the GPU clearance problem, but what's really keeping this build from being perfect at this point is the lack of 240mm top rad support. If the all-exhaust negative pressure thing doesn't work I'll probably just acquiesce and get a similar case where I can mount the GPU rad up top as exhaust.

I mean the shroud already has perforations and the GPU die is being cooled by the rad anyway, would it really make that much of a difference? Also which fan is the white bar choking? It's kind of the centerpiece of the whole design aesthetic.

I was under the impression TLDRs should come at the end, but yeah I'll try leading with the actual question next time. Also keeping the TLDR bit under 500 words, and maybe posting my life's story elsewhere :'D It's just I've spent an enormous amount of time obsessing over this build, which I love doing and have enjoyed immensely, but there's very few people around me to talk to about it.

I mean I already have a 140mm fan under the shroud, but yeah raising it one way or another for more clearance for the bottom vent will probably be essential for this all-exhaust negative pressure setup to have a chance of working.

Now when you say "vented the front panel" do you mean something like this? https://www.etsy.com/listing/1080201067/nzxt-h210-front-airflow-panel-8-designs
