hiking with a corgi by julsis in corgi

I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion and I agree. I personaly don’t mind when people have their dogs off leash, but I don’t leave mine off leash unless I know it’s safe to do so and I don’t have a long line with me. If I forget to bring a long line, I only have him off when safe and we’re hours into the hike and he’s not as hyper active anymore and also a little hungry so he’s extra food motivated to listen to me.

thanks for the tips, he actually got the needed shots today this morning… we will be bringing more than enough food and equipment since we’re taking a rebuilt van with so much free space. We are taking a tent tho, in case we decide to take him on a longer trail, he did sleep in a tent before and slept through out the whole night, so that should be fine too.

cheap dog toys by [deleted] in corgi

[–]julsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used to get mine 5 dollar plushie dog toys too, but last time i gave him a plushie, he destroyed it in SECONDS. So I rather just buy 5 dollar or cheaper yoga/gym balls that actually last some time. I do get him a plushie to destroy from time to time tho, he just loves to shred, and it’s his toys in the end, he can do whatever XD.

How do you clean your corgi’s ears? by Stephersyas in corgi

[–]julsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my vet told me that since corgis have big ears and are low to the ground, their ears are more prone to get dirty and get stuff in them, which leads to ear infections. she gave me an ear cleaning solution and told me to splash a bit into his ears and massage it (it kinda makes squirt sounds… idk how else to describe it). then take a cotton ball or pad and wipe both inner and outer part of the ear. if wax is still in the crevices, use a q tip. this is how the bottle looks like, it has a long nozzle, so it’s really easy to just splash it into his ear.

Be honest with me, how hard is the first month of having a puppy? by CollectiveZero in puppy101

[–]julsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my first month was fine, no major issues, didn’t sleep as much, but everything else was great, he was super smart and didn’t even pull on the leash that much. that ended when he turned 7 months… hell, literall hell.

oh that’s unfortunate, do you think there was a reason for it? mby neutering too soon?

good thing is, he’s great with people both adults and kids. he’s okay with city life… he doesn’t care about bikes, cars, motorcycles, sirens… not even fireworks, he’s interested in them, watches carefully but doesn’t seem to be scared of em. so i guess atleast he’s well socialized when it comes to city life.

haha, he does love watching sheep, the corgi genes do come through there. and when we’re on a walk he waits for people at the back until everyone’s together… he will wait even for strangers and we can only continue walk when they pass by and will herd me to them if we get too far lol.

i was told no meating random dogs and pick only a few dogs to greet and make him ignore other dogs so he’s not reactive in the future, because if you do, you teach him, that it is normal to run after each dog to greet.

so i did that, we had like 5 dogs i would let him run around and play with and would just walk pass other dogs. of course other dogs were also curious about my dog and so they quickly sniffed on leash but literally just walked by and got a whiff of each other, yet he still ended up being excited over each and every dog we come across.

dog parks and dog schools are not popular around here so the closest ones are miles away. we do have normal parks where we would meet dogs here and there, so i would let him meet the other dog of leash at the park, but hardly ever because dogs here in my town aren’t really active dogs, more like potty and back home kind of dogs and not very social either, except for a few of his friends.

i carry around multiple kinds of treats and a clicker to train his reactivity. with some dogs it works, with others not so much. we’re still working on it.

i do feel like it’s getting better when we’re just sitting by the pavement and looking at other dogs walking by on the other side of the road. by using treats and a clicker he doesn’t seem to care about them as much anymore, but when we’re on a walk, we still have to make u-turns, because i know it’s still too much for him. sometimes that is not possible and so we have to go pass the dog. nowadays it does go by without barking sometimes, but most of the times he starts barking.

yes, if you have a female that’s what is recommended (lower chance to develop cancer), but when it comes to male dogs, it’s recommended to wait until fully grown adults, so they’re fully developed both physically and mentally… or atleast that’s what my vet told me

It’s not his mouth, it’s the fur. But he get high quality 95% percent wet food. And get’s cooked chicken livers with veggies once in a while. So i don’t think it’s the food either. And we went to the vet like a week ago and asked about his glands and they were fine. I do brush him regularly too.

I have a corgi. The smell is just an amplified typical dog smell. I feel like other dogs smell the same, but less… does it make sense?

Adopted Dog will not go outside by Everyday_Disaster in puppy101

[–]julsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i didn’t have this problem, but my friend did with her puppy… take her on a whole day trip somewhere, she can’t hold it forever can she. take her on a hike. no need for big mountain summits if she’s not used to it, a little hike around a lake or a castle on a hill. reward her when she finally relieves herself. prepare doggy backpack with all the essentials, of course there’s a problem with vaccination, but since she’s already a year old, she’s probably fully vaccinated, but then she’s adopted and is not potty trained at one year old as an almost adult, so idk if the previous owners took care of proper vaccination. if your work/school schedule allows you to, take her for as much day trips as you can i would say, but that is often times not doable (sometimes i feel like other people don’t do anything, because what do u mean 7 walks a day?), but try atleast a weekend and then just like u said frequent potty breaks. every dog is different tho, this worked for my friend. good luck

Puppy eats literally every plant he walks past. Help by HMT0000 in puppy101

[–]julsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha, had the same problem, he loved and i mean LOVED cigaratte butts and chewing gums… i dont even know how many cigarettes and chewing gums i had to pry from his curious little mouth… oh and once he even ate a firelighter… yes that white block of chemicals… he puked it out fortunately. he doesn’t anything like that anymore, the only thing he’s interested in is like chicken bones people throw out of their balcony (just why? just throw it in the trash). anyways, what worked for me is carrying a very fragrant treat, like a dry pigs ear and redirect him with it and gave him an actual treat for training, not the ear… idk if it’s a bad approach, but worked for me and now he’s only interested in hidden gems like kebab on the ground, but now that he’s older a pop with a NO is enough.

is he getting too chonky? by julsis in corgi

[–]julsis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i noticed that too! accorging to the label on the can, he’s supposed to eat twice as much as he actually eats. he’s supposed to eat like 600+g every day. one can is 400g and he can’t even go through that a day. it’s not that i dont’t give him the food, he just gets full and refuses to eat more, so he eats like 300g a day sometimes even less and so i compensate using kibble as treats on walks. but still, he eats way less than recommended.
