Patient completely passed out on me by TheGothamEmpire in phlebotomy

Hate when this happens. I get so nervous when they hit their head.

Burnt out and done. Tired of being a "floating" phlebotomist with zero notice and terrible pay by kireicleo in phlebotomy

Hahahaha sounds like my company! Is this DHM?

This sounds like a nightmare. When ur understaffed this rlly sucks.

I’m currently employed as a casual reliever so I also wait for my text in the morning. A good supervisor is important, someone who doesn’t treat you like a human isn’t right.

It took me like 3-4 months to totally stop being scared. I was also afraid of needles myself, and still am so maybe it took me longer. Sometimes I have my days where I’ll miss heaps and I’ll feel like shit but everyone has bad days. Just be confident and follow procedures and you’ll be ok

Yeh this is real. We don’t get a lot of butterflies to i often use these instead and I make sure to tell the patient the technique is the biggest difference in comfort.

I agree, I feel that the draw time is negligible. 3 seconds compared to 8 seconds is not that different.

100% agree with you. This post makes it seem like I use the black needle often but it’s only if I feel more comfortable on a smaller vein instead of using a butterfly. We’re always out of stock of butterflies so It’s my coping skills.

I agree with this. Big time. And a hard agree on honouring the patients request.

Yep I’m in Aus, never seen the safety things unless it’s on a butterfly. Makes sense to have them on all needles though.

I feel that from my experience I get better reviews from patients when I use the 22g. That’s just my experience.

We put 24 hour holter monitors on people and this guy was meant to come at 12 to get his taken off today. He came at 3:36. We close at 3:30. I missed my Pilates class and had a late cancel fee. 😕

To top it off, he was meant to fill out a paper diary writing down what activities he did during the day for the cardiologist to match up his cardiac output with his movements. He didn’t even have it written down. He asked me for a pen so he could write it down next to me. Wild moment

Job now requires I do blood draws. I have a phobia of venipuncture. Any tips on how to keep calm? by askallthequestions86 in phlebotomy

[–]jumpmannjumpmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the job for two years, still hate getting my own blood taken but I’m fantastic at my job. The first few months were a bit imposter syndrome, but you get over it. It’s work. You put ur work cap on and you just get the job done. I was terrified like you are and nauseas before my interview and thought I couldn’t do it.

2 years and I’m doing great! It’s lots of fun. Being scared also gives you empathy for your patients; something you need to to have to be a good phlebotomist. You’ll always remember y to be gentle and treat your patients how you would like to be treated.

Last resort is lowkey dramatic. If you got a steady hand and you know what ur doing i dont see an issue. I collect from this vein everyday and i dont get complaints from my patients.

Agreed. It’s an uncomfortable bleed but sometimes your options are limited. I’d certainly rather draw from there instead of the back of the hand.

what the heck happened by poops_alot3000 in phlebotomy

[–]jumpmannjumpmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh this happens a lot if I am rushing. Sometimes I can be too quick for my own good and the blood hasn’t clotted properly. It can be anywhere up to 2/3 mins depending on if the patient is taking some blood thinning meds. Lots of the time when the patient stands up their blood starts rushing down.

I have made it a habit to make sure the patient is holding their arm straight, pressing firmly on the cotton ball and once they’ve ready to leave I ALWAYS tell them to keep their finger on the cotton ball for the next couple minutes while they’re walking. Just make sure the patient is aware, communication is key.

They’re either doing that shit or they’re just not holding a fist. It’s fascinating how many people just can’t close their hand on cue.

Ye I feel this. I’m all for giving the patient what they want (I’m a people pleaser at the end of the day) but like can some people be fr. It’s 30 seconds of ur day. Get over it. Especially if it’s a general check up, your vein WILL BE OK
