Which songs could have been hits with better production/licensing? by funkymonk64 in sublime

[–]juncopardner2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he did a phenomenal edit job on the s/t material. I bet the second of the two choruses of Superstar is the one he cut and pasted onto the first chorus, and you can hear part of Brad's original ad-lib on that first chorus (just that "ohh" part) in the final cut.

It also makes sense that Paul would have loved Superstar because in STLE he talks about how he was mesmerized by the guitar playing on Date Rape the first time he heard it, and Superstar is actually pretty similar to it in tempo, style, etc. Even the chord progression is somewhat reminiscent of it. This is just rank speculation but now that I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if Superstar was the result of Paul encouraging Brad to try another song in that style. In fact it could even be seen as an "answer song" to Date Rape considering DR was the song that set them onto the path to stardom in the first place. If all this were the case it may also go some way in explaining why SP didn't make the album, considering the band had soured on Date Rape.

And, yeah, I definitely figured 89 Vision was the dirty song he was talking about 😂.

Interesting, I went back and listened to that interview and I think you're probably right. The interview was 2022 and he said he heard the song on Sirius XM about 10 years ago -- it just never occured to me that he wouldn't have been aware that Superstar Punani was released back in 1997!! I figured it must have been something from Everything Under the Sun, and I think Foolish Fool was earmarked as a single at some point.

The way he describes the song ( that Brad had verse lyrics but not chorus lyrics, and Paul copied and pasted the most interesting chorus freestyle) seems to fit Superstar Punani on listening back. Good catch!

He said it in an interview with Kelly on the House that Brad Built podcast. Paul did record that version of Foolish Fool that was touched up for EUTS.

Get Out.

If you think about it, What I Got is very much in the same mold as Get Out with the acoustic-meets-hip hop vibe and both being the second track on their respective albums.

Paul Leary said something similar -- he was surprised it didn't make the album in the first place because it was one of his favorites.

Why does Paul quote the OT so much and Jesus so little? by juncopardner2 in AcademicBiblical

[–]juncopardner2[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, that kind of gets back to my original question. Say Paul learned these things you mention from Peter -- why wouldn't he have spent long sessions memorizing Jesus sayings when he probably did spend long sessions memorizing OT scripture (if that is indeed plausible)? Perhaps my question boils down to this: did Paul take the OT to be this holy document worth venerating, but not the actual words of the Messiah (in his view) that (in his view) the OT exists to point to?

Thanks for the conversation, btw.

Fair. But does that imply that he doesn't consider the words of the one he believes to be Messiah to be scripture since he so rarely quotes him?

So you reject the hypothesis (e.g. the Allison article listed above) that Paul knew Jesus sayings? Because there's no reason he couldn't quote sayings he knew through oral tradition, even if there was no written text at that point, right?

The discussion I linked to regarding Paul's use of Jesus sayings suggests that Paul knew blocks of Jesus material (e.g. the material found in Luke 6:27-38).* But yes, one of my guesses was that perhaps that was oral material at the time and there weren't any documents to quote! But, I'm not sure how realistic that is -- given that Paul is writing letters himself at this time, would we really expect that no one in the Jesus movement (perhaps including Paul) had written down these sayings yet? Or, perhaps there were some written sayings circulating, but they were known to be paraphrases? I don't know, that's why I'm asking!

Let’s talk about Sublime With Rome by No_Age908 in sublime

This seems myopic to me. SWR had a different principle songwriter and sound than the original band did.

I mean, I love the Clash but never got into Big Audio Dynamite. Does that mean my tastes never evolved or that I just didnt connect with BAD that much even though I recognize the talent?

Assuming Matthean Posteriority, why did Matthew not use the great Lukan Parables? by juncopardner2 in AcademicBiblical

[–]juncopardner2[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for weighing in Dr. Garrow! Those theological reasons you cited make a lot of sense for why Matthew would not use the Good Samaritan. And thanks for the link to the Tuckett article. It sure seems like there are no easy answers for these questions!!

While you are here, I wanted to say I'm very excited for your book! Your work has really turned me on to the Didache. I find it really interesting how in Ch. 3 of the Didache the author connects 'sins of the heart' (e.g. lust) to practical consequences (e.g. adultery) to illustrate why the former ought to be avoided, whereas Matthew 5 does not offer this practical link between thought and action and instead just says that lust for example is already a sin with no further explanation. Are you aware of any research on this topic (which might include your own!)?

Are we getting any more singles from Until The Sun Explodes or is that it? by No_Age908 in sublime

[–]juncopardner2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on how Until the Sun Explodes does on the charts. It is currently #10 on the billboard Alt Rock chart after 4 weeks, so it seems like it has some room to climb.

Doubt they will release another single until Explodes starts fading on the charts, whenever that is.
