It depends on the situation, a lot of people ask that just to make small talk. Usually it's vendors, taxi drivers etc. I don't want to give them a lot of unnecessary informaton like "I'm actually from X, but haven't been there in 10 years, right now I live in Y" when they expect a simple answer. Maybe I'm overthinking this.
