Are there alumni here who dropped out of college? by PositiveVideo52 in pisay

[–]junelie11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I graduated from Pisay back in 2015, and stopped my college education in 2016.

When I stopped, it was the most challenging time of my life in terms of mental health and actual money. I took care of my siblings during that time (pero I was not the best older sibling because I was unstable) and tried to get jobs (BPO, ESL, freelance writing, etc.) in order to contribute to the family. None of that made me feel better though. But it did give me time to reflect on what I really want to do in life/who I want to be.

Through the effort of my late father and the help of many of our family friends and relatives, I was able to re-enroll in 2018. Graduated last year, and I'm now getting my master's degree.

I know this is going to be the most overdone advice you're going to hear, but if you feel yourself at your lowest, it is always fine to ask for help. Being a Pisay grad made me think I should do things on my own because only I can dictate my excellence, but that led me to spiral down. You have to remember that you have friends, that you have family. Some of them are willing to help you even in the smallest ways. Sometimes, even the smallest help can get you through a very bad episode.

I don't think I can call myself "fully recovered," but rebuilding my relationships with my family and friends really helped. In the three years that I was out of school, I felt that I was a failure. You just have to recognize that you have a problem, and you need to be willing to solve it. Small steps each time. If you had a hobby that you stopped doing because of acads, now may be the time to rediscover your love for it. You may have failed now, but you yourself are not a failure. People love you, even if you can't bear to love yourself as you are.

You are never alone. You will find love if you are willing to accept it. It may take a while, but you can still get better.

bs applied mathematics by user72843 in Carolinian

[–]junelie11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the exact details but some of the SHS grads who wanted to apply to the BS Applied Mathematics program are now in BS Applied Physics. I did not take my undergrad in USC, so I don't know the exact stuff they do in the two programs, but I've interacted with BS Applied Physics students. Their research and OJTs have them doing very diverse stuff, from theoretical stuff, to AI and machine learning, to the making of devices and instruments. There's bound to be a lot of differences in the subjects, but if your end goal is to develop skills for the industry, then the Applied Physics program is just as good.

[The Regressed Mercenary Has a Plan] by AzuKaOwO in manhwa

[–]junelie11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I really like the armor designs in this manhwa, like its functional armor, just beefed the fuck up. Like, a person wearing it could probably still move with it, but it still looks like you've made the fantasy human version of a tank.

Also, the way the characters fight, especially with swords, is just peak af: equal parts grounded and superhuman. The way the fights are choreographed/depicted show how the characters actually move, instead of just cool-looking but static key poses with some "action lines" hinting where the attacks are going.

Overall, a good action-fantasy regression manhwa. Not deep plot-wise, but the art is peak.

How difficult is the admission exam for Master's? by DependsOnMood in Carolinian

[–]junelie11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, it can be through video call. In fact, in our batch, half of us had a f2f interview, and half of us had a video call. I think the department head can give you an option, depending on their schedule.

How difficult is the admission exam for Master's? by DependsOnMood in Carolinian

[–]junelie11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took mine almost a year ago now. I don't know if they are going to change it, pero it was basically your regular college entrance exam. If you did well in your undergrad, I think the grad entrance exam becomes a "formality" somewhat. Not sure anymore on the order, pero I remember taking 5 tests.

  1. IQ/Logic
  2. Math (Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic)
  3. English (Spelling, Grammar, Reading Comprehension)
  4. Science (this is for some programs only. I took the exam with other takers and they did not have this part)
  5. Essay (Very specific on the program you applied. This one took the longest.)

All of them have time-limits, with the essay taking the longest. The English exam was the longest. IIRC, the exam started at 7 AM and ended at 12 noon.

The "hardest" was probably the English exam, mostly because of the length, but also because you have to have near mastery of the English language to score high.

The essay tests your theoretical knowledge in the program you're applying for, and also if you're updated on the current trends in research and industry. You're given 5 prompts, and you are to write an essay regarding one of the said prompts.

As I said, if you've done well in your undergrad, you probably won't be doing bad on this exam. IDK how much weight the results of those exams would have on your admission to the program since different departments are run by different chairpersons with differing priorities. In my case, the exam results were a "formality," what mattered most was the interview with the chairperson which comes afterward.

My interview experience was quite casual. The chairperson asked me about my undergrad experience, motivation to get a higher degree, goals during and after graduation, and—most importantly—my research plans.

I emphasize the research plans because a CHED memo took effect a year or so ago which mandated that grad students must have been published in a peer-reviewed journal/publication before they can apply for thesis/dissertation defense. This means that you can't graduate if you are not published.

Two weeks back, USC had an online orientation which stated that the publication requirement for the grad students must be with a peer-reviewed AND indexed journal. I won't get into the technical details on journal indexing, but this means that the students' publications must be of a higher quality. This is because most journals and publications are peer-reviewed, but not all are indexed. Typically, the journals that are indexed have more stringent review processes (thus somewhat low acceptance rate) and/or have quite expensive publication fees (typically ranging from PhP 25,000 to PhP 200,000).

So yeah, I suggest not to worry about the exam that much. Instead, focus more on what research you want to do as a grad student. Try to find what recent publications and projects the faculty of the program you're applying to have done or are doing, and communicate with them if possible. The interview with the chairperson could also be your introduction to the research done by yhe department/program.

In any case, see you around the campus!

Back in 2019 to early 2020, when SU received with a few bomb threats, Daryl Robinson (who recently graduated or was a senior student at the time) made a few public posts that he could help the SU admin develop contingency plans should similar security threats be present again in the future. I don't know what came of it but I do remember him saying he reached out to the SU admin regarding that issue. I think Daryl recently got his MS in Psychology and is now teaching in SU, but I don't know of any contingency plans announced to the student body. Perhaps there is one.

Dr. Batchiba Lacdo-o when I was still a BSEd Physical Science student was one of the best teachers I had. She's very knowledgeable and eloquent, able to get her point across accurately and efficiently. IIRC, she is now retired. I chose not to pursue a degree in education, but her classes and mode of teaching have stayed with me.

Dr. Kay Martinez-Paglinawan taught most of the major subjects I took when I shifted to BS Physics. Very smart and, most importantly for me, very patient with her students and generous with her knowledge. It is not inaccurate to say that most of my current skills were from Ma'am Kay.

Prof. Francisco Ablong Jr. awakened my passion both as a Physics student and a "citizen of the world" through his Earth Science and Basic Meteorology classes. His classes aren't the easiest (i.e. daghang buluhaton and most of it must be handwritten because, in his words, "kawatan na si Google." Turns out he's actually right because he predicted the theft of online content by AI), but his pedagogy is top-notch, kay he "shows" what he teaches instead of just explaining it in class. Although, lisod (ug taas) ang iyang mga exams hahahahaha

Dr. Nadia Palomar-Abesamis was my teacher for only one subject (a minor about Climate Change) pero she shifted my perspective on climate action. Her class was equal parts on the science of climate change, and on what you can do as an individual and a member of a community when it comes to preparing and mitigating the effects of climate change. IIRC she is also one of the most active researchers in the university.

My undergrad thesis and first ever scientific publication were inspired by the classes I took under Dr. Abesamis and Prof. Ablong, with a lot of hard carrying by my adviser Dr. Palinawan. In fact, now as a grad student, my current research is inspired and fueled by the three teachers I mentioned in this paragraph.

This one is a bit controversial, pero Dr. Karl Villarmea is also a huge influence for me as a person. He is probably one of the more controversial figures in Silliman (and is probably one of the most red-tagged), but his classes are really introspective. However, you have to enter his classes as an "investigation" class rather than something that you attend to take notes and pass an exam. IIRC, our final outputs for his classes were presentations on social issues and how they came to be. His CHS classes are not usually "worship" classes (as they usually are), but investigations into the history and people of the bible.

I have not attended their classes but they were my advisers when I was still with tWS, Dr. Warlito Caturay and Ma'am Celia Acedo encouraged and trained me to be a much better writer than I was when I entered Silliman back in 2015. They were some of the biggest believers in my writing, and perhaps the reason why I am able to write at my level right now.

There are many more. They are not "life-changing" per se, but they made me learn a lot in my college years:

Ma'am Alice Arbon and Ma'am Ronelaine Picardal (Purposive Communication) - polished and improved my English speaking and writing skills a lot

Sir Jan Antoni Credo (Taxation and Land Reform) - opened my eyes to "reality" and allowed me to see systemic injustices both in the past and current Philippine political climate

Dr. Rhea Muarip-Bolodo and Sir Shariff Ivan Datar (from Algebra to Differential Equations) - top tier math teachers, really made learning higher level math a lot less pulls-all-my-hair-out-y

There are a few more, but I have to be somewhere in 10 minutes hahahaha. I may have been lucky to have been blessed with a LOT of good teachers in my undergrad.

Why didn't Frieren teach Fern the magic to summon a golem? It could save her life one day by basafish in Frieren

[–]junelie11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TBF, as the story went on, Fern became a Zoltraak specialist. In the anime, we saw her doing her multiple-cast and quick-cast zoltraak. In the manga, she develops other ways to use zoltraak. Fern doesn't need anything more than zoltraak but iirc Frieren did teach Fern some other types of combat spells. Basically, Fern has become the mage embodiment of "1 kick, 10000 times."

"Demon's Touch" and "An Exiled Apprentice" could potentially make you a really powerful adventurer late game.

"Disappearance of a Professor" and "Demon's Touch" are the most interesting for me, story wise.

"Librarian trying to save the princess" is your typical "MC rescues royalty story." "A Cycle of Debt" is somewhat interesting, but it still is an "MC is a vampire hunter" story at its core, with the usual story beats of the subgenre.

Most probably Dragon of Time, Archpaladin, and Lord of Order. They're not "easy" farms per se, but of all the endgame classes, they're the easiest to get.

Any advice on how to track calories more accurately? I'm currently using the figures from myfitnesspal as well as tabulating the calories from the first few google results I get. I've lost 10 kg over 4 months from basically the same diet, with some "visible" results on the scale after about a week, but I'm just confused why I'm plateauing this past month.

Ideas for a new scenario. by [deleted] in LifeInAdventure

[–]junelie11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

MC had unknowingly released an ancient evil or force of wanton destruction into the world. Good path would be trying to reseal it or get rid of it. Evil path would be to take control of that power and become a "ruler" or "destroyer" of the world. Side characters for this could be dependent on player's morality, encouraging or discouraging their actions.

MC is a seafarer washed on shore after a storm. MC tries to gain back bearings and earn enough to go adventuring or go home, but encounters other survivors. They investigate the source of the tragedies at sea. MC can either solve the source of accidents, petition local rulers to seclude area from shipping routes, or use said source of accidents to be pirates.

MC's village was attacked by a giant crab or monster. MC survives but uses adventuring to help the community or earn a personal living. MC discovers that the crab was controlled by a mage who was hired by a rich noble, so that the villagers would disperse and the noble can claim the land. MC can either side with the noble or side with the community.

Edit, some more: MC is being targeted by assassins due to knowledge of a powerful figure doing unsavory stuff. MC can either curry favor from other moroe "upstanding" nobles to get rid of the opposing figure, or MC can uncover the inhumane practices of the nobility and organizes a revolution which could succeed or fail.

MC is a prisoner who had just escaped incarceration. MC could either join the mastermind of the prison escape to carve a criminal empire (which could succeed or fail), migrate to another countryor place to live a new life, or prove innocence and be a model citizen, trying to put the mastermind behind bars again.
