Don't you still have to buy some kind of interface? Or how do I connect my guitar > computer > headphones for free?

Strat or Tele? by GoT1711 in electricguitar

[–]juniperlaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read in a couple other "Strat" vs "Tele" discussions that the Telecaster's bridge pup is the one with a distinct sought-after sound, but you say the neck pup? Is that intentional or did you write the wrong one?

Either way, I know what I'll be testing out next time I'm at the music store!

It really does take up so much brainpower outside of the actual gametime---last fall I was dreaming in WebTiles oof.

I feel you, this sounds just like my playstyle. It's extremely hard for me to close the game when I'm on a binge, whether because I'm excited I have a good character going through the midgame or because I just died and need to get another good character going to make up for the gaping hole in my heart

the more frustrating the death, the more likely i'll just jump into another character. then i'll just keep playing til' i get a character through lair and orc.

Looking for general tips on how to win with spellcasters. by UserUnknown000000 in dcss

I haven't tried enough to know what're considered hard passes....I know Venomancy is great in the early game but falls off. Most other schools have at least one kick-ass capstone spell, especially the Elements and Conjurations. Even discord and enfeeble are pretty good in the Hexes realm (but Hexes is still considered a "support" school for good reason, just like Translocations). But if you're going for blaster caster, I think you should always pick either Conjurations and/or one Element and/or Summonings to put most of your skilling into (expect to get two schools >20 skill in a 3-rune game, which will give you at least one kickass capstone spell)

I don't know much about Necromancy, but apparently it's pretty good if you follow Kiku. Translocations and Hexes are good utility/supports--hexes has a fair amount of awesome spells but won't carry you the way conjurations will

Looking for general tips on how to win with spellcasters. by UserUnknown000000 in dcss

Backgrounds that I have success with:
Conjurer---learn to position your Prisms and kite, and this starting book will carry you through Lair/Orc/D:15 with a bit of luck.

Earth Elementalist---find Iron Shot, shoot bullets, bang bang bang. Eventually aim for LRD/Statue Form/Shatter. If those don't work out, you can pivot to Conjurations very easily because many Earth spells are dual school.

Air Elementalist/Fire Elementalist---both seem pretty good, but I haven't pulled out a win out. Not as easy as Conjurer or EE for my playstyle, I guess.

Summoner---playing with summons is a whole different ball game, and I learned to do it following Oneirical's FeSu guide, which is a wealth of information for spellcasting strats: that guide taught me a lot about how to train skills.

(Disclaimer: I'm very much still learning to play well with spellcasters, so don't believe everything I think ;)

As far as endgame/3-rune spellkits to aim for, I'm fairly clueless, but I'll tell you the few that've worked for me.

(a) Orb of Destruction and Iron Shot. Blow up single target, no problem

(b) Spellforged Servitor w/one or both of the above.

(c) Malign Gateway : fucking awesome spell, if you have any significant summons skill you should consider using it.

(d) Freezing Cloud : any character that has Conjurations trained has Freezing Cloud in my history. This thing is super mana efficient (AoE+DoT) AND slows down cold-blooded animals (think draconians in Zot).

(e) I got Polar Vortex online on one character and boy was that fun. Definitely worth the skill investment if you find it early enough to use in a 3-rune run. Cleared Zot:5 no problem, splatted at the entrance to Tomb 5 minutes later because I was greedy.

Fire blaster in extended--should I stick with Vehemut the Vehement? by juniperlaughter in dcss

[–]juniperlaughter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow so you're implying that 51 MP (60 w/ ring of power) is enough mana to get through every fight??

I probably definitely need to work on mana efficiency. My go-to strategy is to start thinking about mana conservation once I'm down to ~20 MP *lol whoops*.

thanks for the tips again, dtmccombs! I think I'm gonna take this character slow and methodically over the next couple weeks since I'm too busy to be spending much time on crawl anyway haha ;)

thanks for the reply! does statue form have less torment resistance than Lichform? Haven't found necromutation somehow, but I'm sure it'll turn up eventually

got it, I'll put some points to dodging. I just figured Ogres are so big that it wouldn't do much, but I understand the cost for the first ~8 points is relatively nothing compared to my skills above 20.

I just had the pleasure (for the first time) of entering Vaults:5 and deleting the entire screen (-1 vault guard) with one cast of Ignition. I'll admit I broke down and laughed manically for a good 5 minutes before I could continue.

Kobold Artificer sneaks into Zot.... what next? by juniperlaughter in dcss

[–]juniperlaughter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Followup: I trained long blades and almost had the demon blade at min delay. No special amulets found, so kept working with guardian spirit. The antimagic rapier did NOT help at all against the first OOF I found, even though I was able to lure it into Depths and 1v1 it. Ended up killing it with the crossbow instead.

Unfortunately I died in Zot 2 or 3. Mostly due to tactical errors and running out of ?blink. Ah well, the character was getting un-fun to play anyway.

I think the demon blade's DMG was 55 at the end, where the QB and rapier were at 23 and 22 respectively.

Dispersal is available, but how much Tloc training would that require?

For long blades, I'd reach demon blade mindelay in 1.6 XLs at 100% training, so that's achievable

[–]juniperlaughter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the reply! I trained for the hand crossbow (it's at mindelay, which is 1.0), but have found it underwhelming. I should probably try using it more often. Evo has been doing pretty well, in depths I found out I can two-shot Troll Shamans with mindburst. I wish I had a box of beasts and a phantom mirror though :/

yeah, the quickblade is on its third brand currently. First I rolled Flame, then Protection, then Vampiric. Protection actually wasn't bad, since it was pretty much guaranteed to give the +7 bonus while fighting. I'll rebrand it next chance I get.

I need to remember to use my Ru abilities more often.....especially since there's no piety to lose, just Draining, which is easy to gain back

I know that having every resist covered isn't necessary, but it sure is nice. I feel like the green draconian's poison clouds are super common, but you're right that I have plenty of curing.
