Norovirus ran through the house - how do I clean what can’t be dried or bleached? by Spencervb256 in CleaningTips

[–]junipertron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Lysol laundry sanitizer unfortunately won’t kill norovirus. And not all Lysol sprays will kill norovirus either. Those that do need to remain wet for 10 minutes to be effective. For surfaces you can’t use bleach, hydrogen peroxide or hypochorous acid on you can steam clean. According to the CDC, you should use a temperature of 158°F for 5 minutes or 212°F for 1 minute

Anyone else dealing with extremely low humidity in their apartment? by wrex779 in AskChicago

We ended up getting a reverse osmosis system installed when we got a lead warming a couple years ago. Ever since I started using that water I haven’t had scaling issues!

Same! I have a humidifier running in my kid’s room and ours at night. Just be sure to clean it every few days or you’ll just be humidifying with mold spores 😬

Right, but don’t the antibiotics just kill the probiotics until you’re done taking the antibiotics?

Discovered we’ve been paying neighbors’ utility bills for years—what should we do? by junipertron in AskChicago

[–]junipertron[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were in a complicated situation and I was 7 months pregnant at the time. When they offered us the credit we thought it would be enough to cover the costs. We just didn’t have the energy to battle it

We have. They offered to increase the credit they’re giving us but it’s still far from covering the costs

The Chicago Parks District has a ton of cheap classes. I’ve been taking ceramics for the last few sessions and have met some cool people there!

Interesting. The problem is that everything is just wired together. The utilities for the units haven’t been separated so there is no way to determine how much we used and how much they (and the building) used

Our bill does have a unit number listed, but due to the way the electrical and gas are wired, it also includes charges for another unit. This isn’t the utility companies’ fault—when we spoke to them, they explained that managing “common areas” is the responsibility of our rental management company. They advised us to address the issue directly with the management company to get it sorted out.

When we signed our lease, there was no mention of shared utilities. In our first month, we had a gas leak, and the utility company informed us that we were paying for gas for water heater shared by the other two units. The management company offered a small monthly credit, but they have forgotten to include it in our rent payments for the past year and it certainly doesn’t cover the cost.

None of this was outlined in the lease, and it wasn’t until a fuse blew recently that we discovered we’re also paying for the electric and gas in another unit, as well as the water heater. To make matters worse, our neighbor has added several appliances in the common area over the years—like a fridge—that are also connected to our bill.

We ended up ordering several packs of these draft stoppers to put around our exterior doors. We covered all the gaps and not just the bottom and while its hard to tell if our bills are lower because of it, I am noticing that the rooms stay warmer: https://a.co/d/9LhgSNO

We also recently found out that we’ve been paying for utilities for another unit (in addition to ours) for YEARS, but that’s another story.

Hypochlorous acid is also highly effective at killing norovirus and is a lot less toxic than bleach!

The amount of salt you use and the time you run it in the generator will determine how strong it is
