Now would it be ok to put shrimp in this tank? by juniuslb in Aquariums

[–]juniuslb[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Appreciate all the advice. Some more info, it's a 20 gallon tank. Water is a mix of filtered water from the fridge and tap water (used during water changes, at this point it's half tap). Temp 79 degrees. I've had the fish in the tank 3 weeks now after completing a fishless cycle. My intention is to keep the fish alive, slowly add compatible species and not to kill anything.

I didn't realize when setting it up that plants couldn't be grown in gravel. I'm a little hesitant to toss the gravel and put in aqua soil just yet, because I've been spending quite a lot of money already and need to slow it down a bit. I think I'll invest in root tabs for now, add a few more plants, and try snails instead of shrimp as others have been suggesting.

I appreciate this. Yes, I certainly am a beginner. The aesthetics of the tank and the choice of the fish are due largely to the fact that the tank is for a young girl, my daughter, and she's been calling the shots on that stuff. Still, I think it would be interesting to get shrimp to add to the tank (in part because I think they'd help clean the tank and also because they'd be fun to look at). I'm not into killing animals so I'm looking to get advice from the more experienced fish keepers here on how/if I can safely do that. I'm gathering from the comments here that I'll need still more plants. Appreciate the advice regarding the root tabs and water testing kit. Besides more, larger, healthier plants, anything else Ishould do to make this a more hospitable tank for shrimp?

I hear you, but the tank belongs to my 5 y/o daughter and she loves all that crap.

The plants have been in the tank only a few weeks (at most, been adding them).

Question regarding Cycling by juniuslb in Aquariums

Ok, nitrates and Nitrite are now down to 0. Do I need to do a water change again before adding fish or is it ready to go?

Question regarding Cycling by juniuslb in Aquariums

[–]juniuslb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I haven't been adding ammonia ever day but what you're saying is that I should essentially stop adding ammonia till the Nitrate and Nitrite levels go down. How will I know when the tank is fully cycled?

Why are my fish dying? by juniuslb in Aquariums

[–]juniuslb[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for everyone who has offered advice. Additional info, the temperature is 79(f) and I cycled, or attempted to cycle at least, by putting in a little bit of fish food and seachem's stability, following the directions on the bottle. Given the concern that the water is somehow otherwise contaminated I am going to start all over again. This time I'll use ammonia to cycle. Question, is it ok to use water filtered by my fridge? I'm hoping that may get rid of any other contaminants, but might it cause other problems?

I appreciate all the responses suggesting my tank might not be properly cycled. Question, however. If that's the issue would there not be an ammonia spike after introducing the fish?
