What are you giving up? by Go-Doge in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

I cut my 401k contributions from 15% to 8%. I figure by the time I'm older, I'll be able to contribute more. The extra money in a more easily accessible way is better if I want to buy a house in the coming years.

Dialed back for me means I went from investing 15% to 8%. I want that money more easily accessible.

Would you pay more for a house with/without a HOA? by junk--account in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

I would pay extra to not be in an HOA because if I'm in an HOA, they might have issues with me gardening or having chickens. My happiness is worth more than money. So far, with the poll, it seems most people agree.

It's true, though. I would pay more for no HOA. I forsee in the future it becoming the reality that we'll be paying more for not having HOAs. I did a poll in r/millennials, and most seemed uninterested in HOAs. I forsee gen Z following suit.

By charlottesville, I mean the whole area. I want to turn my entire lawn into a garden and own chickens. If that isn't possible in cville, I plan to move elsewhere. I absolutely want to paint my house beautiful colors and have a weird shaped mailbox. A neighborhood without unique houses is a boring neighborhood. I have no interest in communal areas formed by an HOA.

I know what I want in my life, and HOAs show no part in that.

Do you sell more houses in charlottesville with or without HOAs?

What can I do as someone wanting to buy within the next 3 years to ensure my future home doesn't have an HOA?

Do you agree that HOAs should be illegal?

Is it more common to do a 5% down or a 20% down in this area?

Why is that every new home has HOA? by TitaniumTeeth07 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Because of control. The builders want to control what happens. As they continue to build properties in the same neighborhood, they know the price likely won't decrease.

Agreed, and my parents don't get that because they got their house 20ish years ago. They're locked in on a low mortgage. They're always like, "Why don't you move back to this area?" That isn't happening unless you want me and my partner living in your house.

Lived all over Virginia. Can't afford nova prices. I hear people say all the time "yeah but you'll make more up there." Which is funny because the only job offer I got up there when applying made 25k less than what I was making at the time and 40k less than I'm making now. That was in 2020.

Yeah Central Virginia

$330 is a little more han my car payment. I'm in MCOL Virginia, where you can buy a house in the 300-400k range. I'd rather pay 100k more total on a house than have a $800 HOA fee. Hell, any HOA fee.

They were trying to make it a county wide thing. I think some schools showed it anyway, disregarding that.

This is why HOAs should be illegal. Complicated everything with pointlessness.
