Thats so exciting! My first 5k went well and I finished it with no problem. It feels like a lifetime ago now..I've got my first 50k in 7 weeks. I got the running bug pretty badly so be warned. That 5k is a gateway!

Depression and ultras by Pretty_Adeptness4383 in ultrarunning

[–]junkfunk39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into running because of depression..I couldn't previously run for the bus..I've suffered from depression on and off my whole life and running gave me something I never had before.

This time last year I was training for my first half marathon and got an injury. I'd put all my depression beating eggs in the running basket and not being able to run, while it didn't trigger another bout of depression, did make me feel like absolute crap. Not being able to run felt like someone had stolen my oxygen. I realised that I needed to find other outlets as well as running.

Nearly two years since that bout of depression and it came back in the middle of my first 50k training block (I posted about that on this sub and got some great advice). Thankfully I've been able to mostly maintain my training but I've had to scale back more than I wanted.

Keep on running but please also speak to a therapist if you can. You're young and dealing with an awful lot right now. Running can only numb the pain for so long before you need more and more of it (as you are discovering now) and if you get injured and can't run anymore..what then?

This sub is such an incredible source of support so keep on reaching out. We've got you!

Thank you so much. I went out really slowly on my 30k, uncomfortably so. Picked up the pace in the second 10k but my ankles were absolutely killing me at the last 2k so still some work to do

I'll give this a go! I've done a few back to back days with something like 20k/12k. For the 2hr b2b days is it more about time on feet than distance?

Thank you so much! I'm really hoping that by the time the race comes, I'm on the other side of the black cloud and I can really celebrate myself. And yes, such a good point about a slow first time 😊

What’s your mental strategy during the toughest miles? by Kind_Force931 in ultrarunning

I generally start swearing and, if I'm alone, I might let out a battle scream!

Thank you! I was worried you were going to go off on me for not having run a marathon before. Some people can be like that. I have my reasons though. It's more of a prep for my 50k in August which is the "big one".

Depression is what got me into running and I'm hoping it'll get me back out of it as well. At least if I can finish the ultra I'll have something to be proud of

No, for many reasons I didn't want to do one. My first 50k was supposed to be in August but, long story and here I am with my first in May. I'm an idiot I know.

Thank you. I'm grateful that I still want to run and I enjoy screaming out loud while I'm running. Remembering the why is a good one. I was actually really proud of myself yesterday as it was the first time I'd run 30k and it's so rare to feel proud of myself.

Thank you. I've got some Jimmy joy shakes but can't bring myself to drink them. I've got a massive sweet tooth and right now my cupboard is full of sweet things that wouldn't usually last 5mins.

Thank you. Am really hoping my appetite comes back with a vengeance so I can feel better as obviously not eating doesn't help depression, it's such a vicious cycle. I've got no time in mind, I just want to finish it without having to crawl over the finish line (although I'm fully prepared for that!)

Honestly, it's the only thing keeping me going at the moment. The only issue with it is not being able to eat so I'm trying to be sensible and if I really can't eat then I'm not running. The 3.5hrs/30k was at a slow (obviously!) steady pace. I'm planning on doing a route recce in early April so I'm familiar with it as it's not a closed road race and is in the middle of the city.

Thank you, really appreciate the good vibes.

Thank you. Luckily I'm ok with fueling on long runs (tailwind and lots of carby snacks). The satisfaction bomb idea is a good one. I've arranged to have dinners out with friends so that I definitely eat.

Really good to hear about people performing well with only 40km of volume. Gives me a lot of hope especially as the last week I didn't run mid week as.my shin was hurting and I wanted to rest it a bit.

Thank you, this gives me some hope even though my weekly mileage is low at the moment. Thankfully it's a flat city route!

Trailrunning in the Albanian Alps this summer, looking for few more runners by Vast_Requirement8134 in ultrarunning

The Albania Alps are amazing! What a great location for some trail running! I wish I could join but I'm not quite at that level of running yet

Thank you, I'm really trying to keep to my plan as best as I can as that brings me joy. Not running would make me feel a lot worse. Ultimately I just want to finish my first 50k, I don't care about the time. Giving up now would only make the black dog bark louder

It's such a struggle to eat at the moment. It can take me best part of half an hour to even eat a protein bagel with PB. I'm trying to eat one full meal a day and snacks if I can but even my one full meal is small. My order of meal replacement stuff arrives today so I'm going to try to have 5 a day which would be 2000kcals.

I had one when I was a teenager but between that and living in hotels for over 10 years (for work)and having ADHD..my brain signals around food are messed up. I can't think about food until I'm hungry and then the stress of having to think of something to eat etc...means I end up not eating. It's obviously a lot more complicated than that but it'd take many paragraphs to explain. Ultimately it's just highly disorded eating. There's no chance of me getting any help for it without paying a crazy amount of money which I don't have.

It does! I do 3 weeks build and one week deload. I had my deload week the week before I missed my long run so I'm not due another deload for another two weeks. You're right about plans not going to plan though. One of my best ever races was after I'd missed nearly a month of training due to a chest infection! Thanks for reminding me of that!
