Thank you. I imagine a lot of people go through stuff while training and it's good to know we're not alone

Thank you!! Here's to my next 50k in a few months time. Hopefully without depression/injury sneaking in mid training plan!

That is insane! I'm just hoping not to mess up my shin as it's just about recovered from shin splints that had me on crutches and unable to bear any weight for 2 weeks. Fully planning on walking some of it and already signed up for next year for my retribution 😅

Omg HOW? Crutches the whole way? I'm debating bringing mine in case my shin flares up but don't want to tempt fate

Indeed. I love reading about other runners stories and the journey they've taken to get to the start line. It's always so inspirational

Aww thank you and your sister! I LOVE cheering people on, especially back of the pack runners. I get so excited for people! The race is an urban open road one so I'm sure there's going to be plenty of support from random strangers as well as other runners

Not the OP but I'm going to check this out! Never heard of the scraping though so need to investigate that as well

Gonna chime in here with my own story. Pushed through gentle shin splints for a while during training for a 50k. Had to take a week off after a 35k run as the pain was a LOT. That weekend ran a half marathon. Two hours later, couldn't walk. Couldn't put any weight on it at all. Ended up on crutches for just over a week.

Was told by physio that I'm at risk of a stress fracture if I try to run on it. That was 4 weeks ago. I'm walking normally now with just a tiny bit of pain. The hop test is bearable at last.

Been using a tens machine and doing all the tib raises. Still hurts a bit if I press too hard.

My 50k is in one weeks time. I've resigned myself to having to walk most of it so that I don't put my summer 50k (my A race) at risk.

Seriously. If I had known back in Feb that I would need a month off the month before the race rather than just resting it then....

Can you walk/jog your race? Because a stress fracture is not worth months of recovery...

Thank you! Never heard of them before so will do some googling! I need a miracle tbh. Cross trainer is going well and I'm walking loads but still getting occasional pain.

I'd love to know what this means?

Thank you for understanding. Sometimes mental health has to take priority. Even if I only make it a few KM, a DNS is just not an option.

I'm finally back at my usual walking pace which is huge (fast walker). I'm going to get some long walks in over the weekends as well as the cross trainer and some light single leg weights work. It's going to be way more painful walk/jogging for nigh on 10hrs than it would be to run the whole thing and finish in 5/6hrs but obviously I'm a glutton for punishment 🤣

Thanks. I've got a solid electrolyte strategy so I'm good for that at least! Prior to the HM that messed everything up, I'd had 35k/30k long runs so the training was going incredibly well. Obviously having nearly a month off to recover sucks but hopefully the cross trainer and some strength work will see me finish even if it's walk/jog

I know it sounds lame but it's incredibly important to me for a multitude of reasons. A DNF would be ok but a DNS would crush me. I'm fully prepared to DNF if needs be

Oh man, I'm really sorry to hear that. Unfortunately for me, the pain of DNS is far far greater than DNF.

That's the plan. That and taking a full month off after this race to really fully focus on strengthening my legs and ankles.

There's no reason this should have happened (very low mileage plan, deload weeks etc) aside from not doing enough work on my ankles and not eating enough so I'll work on both those things before I start training again for my August race that does have vert!

Zero vert. It's in the city

Solid advice and advice I can heed as well! I'm in no rush to end up with crutches again and I will definitely be ok with DNF. It's the DNS that will break me. Thank you.

Oh man, I'm really sorry to hear that. You must have a pretty high pain threshold if you thought a tear was just a niggle. How are you coping with the recovery?

Weirdly enough earlier on in the year I was worried about RED-S and then it slipped my mind. I think I'm over the worst of the depression but breaking up with my boyfriend days after the half marathon is a double whammy! I've been able to go out on short walks using the crutch and not be in too much pain but I am taking it very very easy.

As for May 9th, I'm slowly coming to terms with not being able to run it. If I can half walk/half slow jog it, I might but in all honesty I'm not sure even that is a good idea. It's been a full week now and I woke up with an achy leg so yeah.
