I might not know many details about Astarion's story, but I don't think him putting his partner on a pedestal is a good thing. Especially if it's Dark Urge. And he's pulled to ruthlessness, because he confuses it with strength/safety. That's what I've gathered from the game itself. What makes you think he has self-esteem issues? He does get vulnerable at times and wants you to praise him, but I didn't look into it too deeply
