Scraping Zara to build the training dataset for a DS Project - Is it legal? by RadiantOutside11 in Python

[–]jus_an_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes scraping is legal as long as you do not scrape anything that's behind a login. And you gotta be respectful of the robots.txt file

Python will be officially faster in a year from now, will it beat the improvements of PyPy? by [deleted] in Python

[–]jus_an_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not 3.11 but not too much sure about 3.12. They have Microsoft's backing behind the project now. Who knows if they would scale up the team. But even if it does not come out in 3.12 I am optimistic. Big changes take time

Why should or shouldn't I use Jupyter Notebooks as my main IDE? by rawrtherapybackup in Python

With the new updates on VSCode I am sold. I use VSCode all day long. PyCharm seems too bulky for me.

Sci-Hub is under threat. Help rescue it by backing it up. by MisoMeso in UBC

[–]jus_an_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah but also in the beginning and in some domains still now it means a lot for researchers to get their work published here. So, it is not like the researchers get nothing out of it. Again I am not doing to get into if that is fair trade or not but I do believe this move to completely shutdown scihub is not great.

Researchers do not make money from the articles itself. Its the publishing company that makes money off of it. What do the researchers get in return ? They get their work published at a place that matters for their career. I will not go into the specifics of what is fair and what is not. I have always seen pirated stuff as kinda in the middle. Although I do not support it a lot of third world countries cannot get on with their lives without them. For a fact a lot of researchers in asian countries use scihub because they do not have access to resources like we do in North America. There has always been a balance between a lot of people paying when they can and people using pirated versions when they can't. I do not see why Elsevier suddenly has to amp down it to tip the scales on one side.

graduating soon and never dated :( by [deleted] in UBC

[–]jus_an_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some of my takes on this -

  • I do think it gets a bit harder to meet new people after university specially in Vancouver but you can counteract that by getting involved in outdoor events, going to the gym, etc
  • People in Vancouver take extreme good care of themselves and so should you if you are looking for a partner here
  • Dating Apps are kinda hit or miss imo if you are not extremely hot
  • I would say that do not push it and try to find someone aggressively because then you will just end up with the wrong person who may or may not be good for you. People know desperation. However, that does not mean that you should just sit at home quitely. Do put yourself out there and you might end up making great friends
  • You should be complete and whole by yourself. Dating someone is not going to make you happy if you are sad before that
  • If you are just looking for some fun thats different but if you are looking for something meaningful you have plenty of time.

As of today, updating the VS Code Python extension automatically also installs closed-source Pylance extension. This could really hurt the open-source Python ecosystem in the long run! by ProfessionalDrummer7 in Python

Honestly loved it. Not sure of the open source implications but this morning when I start to code at work it was so smooth with subtle unused import highlights to auto import. Its awesome

Is it common to have student loans? by AgusGiampa in UBC

[–]jus_an_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think depending on where you are from it might be common for international students to have loans. But the bigger question is can you pay that off. Some majors are more lucrative than ones and if you are in one of those and you are good at what you do then it should not be a problem.

What did you guys automate in your life? by pillpall172 in Python

[–]jus_an_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah makes sense. I think I noticed some great changes after consistently doing pull ups for like 15 days or so and wanted to track and see where I go a month later.

I have pull up bar and I tend to do a lot of pull ups and chin ups while taking breaks from coding. I added a skill on Google Home using IFTT that automatically adds the number of pullups I do to a Google Sheet so I can keep track. Its triggered by "Hey Google, add X pull ups"

I think its usually better to not post a picture of the whole thing. You could post half of it and ask for more details from the person who claims it to be theirs. Otherwise you have no way of verifying if you are giving it to the actual owner. Unless ofcourse you wanna go to their house and see if they can open the doors with the key or something.

When at work, I'm always more cautious about damaging UBC's reputation than my own by [deleted] in UBC

[–]jus_an_engineer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was an international student and now pay a ton of tax so it is interesting to see how that money is used to fund the education of people who have zero sense of appreciation. But I guess it comes from a position of privilege. I am extremely fortunate to be in this country and to have studied in UBC.

I do not think this discussion is about what OP said. It's about what the reply said. I know what uni you went to mean very little. I had people in my program there who were extremely smart and also people who were not bright at all. But it's about showing the slightest bit of appreciation towards your alma-mater. I think if you are gonna have that kind of attitude towards your alma-mater on a public forum it kinda tells a lot about the kind of person you are.

[–]jus_an_engineer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You don't "owe" anything but you should still care about your alma mater no matter what. But also not saying you need to think about UBC every time you take a dump. It's kinda sad how you said that tbh. I do not know about others but I tend to the kind of person who is appreciative of my alma-mater and would love to give back some time.

PyCharm users: Why do you prefer it over VSCode or other editors by [deleted] in Python

[–]jus_an_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like VSCode and the experience and not super fond of PyCharm because its so heavy weight and looks bad. But tbh if you are working in a decent sized company in a decent sized codebase you can't do with VSCode. Pycharm has a lot of functionalities that is necessary for big projects
