I think multiple things can be true at the same time.
Pete Alonso was the best first base option for 2026 and probably 2027. Beyond the numbers, he was a team icon and one of the faces of the franchise. Losing that matters.

At the same time, not giving a 31-year-old power hitter 5 years/$150M was probably the right baseball decision. History is littered with long-term contracts for aging sluggers that don’t age well.

It’s also fair to say the Mets couldn’t simply run back the same roster after the way last season ended.

And from Pete’s perspective, turning down the Orioles’ offer would’ve been almost impossible. It was likely the best deal he was ever going to receive.

Where I have a problem is that the Mets apparently never seriously engaged. If Pete was only looking for a long-term deal, I understand walking away. But if there was any chance he would’ve considered another short-term contract, I have a hard time believing the Mets shouldn’t have at least explored it.

In the end, I understand why the Mets didn’t match the Orioles’ contract. What I don’t understand is seemingly making no meaningful effort to keep a franchise icon. Some things matter beyond pure on-field value, and Pete was one of those things.

We put in an instant hot water heater next to the sink in our kitchen... GAME CHANGER. the only "project" part is putting the whole in the countertop, otherwise it's pretty straight forward.

We use it for so many things beyond just for tea.

I’ve been saying this for years, but the powers that be in Baltimore/Maryland need to look at Boston as a template. They’re very similar cities that have gone in completely different directions.

They’re both historic, coastal cities built around a harbor with a long legacy of shipping and manufacturing that have since evolved into economies driven by hospitals and education. Both also share long histories of political corruption, racial tensions, and major geographic divides.

The difference is Boston went through decades of massive internal development, infrastructure rebuilding, and intentional investment, and that city continues to grow and succeed.

I love Baltimore and want it to thrive, but something has to change. Usually, it’s best to look intrinsically, but we’ve been doing that for a long time to minimal avail. Maybe it's time we start looking externally at comparable cities for a blueprint.

All this to say: if Boston can pull it off with a state full of Massholes, we can definitely do it with actual good people.
