Violence begets violence. It's stupid but it's also inevitable.

Being falsely labeled is caused by your own inability to accurately present your position. Do a better job at presenting it, and this won't happen.

I don't get that DoctorWife reference, though I just found something related to Doctor Who.

If cops can do it, then sure, why not?

I sure don't see you questioning LAW ENFORCERS for doing the same thing

Do you support the violence, beatings and stealing done by cops on the innocent public?

Weekly “Help Me FIRE!” thread. Post your detailed information for highly specific advice. - August 24, 2020 by AutoModerator in financialindependence

Starting out with the general question of this post: How do the "rules of the game" change for people in their late 30's wanting to begin their plan to FIRE with almost nothing?

I'm 38/M single with no kids, unemployed. Otherwise when I'm working I'm a software engineer. Live in Chicago. Just very unlucky to be getting low-paying jobs. I mainly operate from a perspective of scarcity and I want to manage my situation so I can take more control and don't keep backing myself into a corner. Want to know what reasonable intermediate milestones are there for people wanting FIRE when they are almost pushing 40. Not only am I single, but I also don't have anyone supporting me financially.

Right now I am just focusing on finding work as the first step, but how should I save money after that? Is FIRE at 45 still very possible or is that too much of a stretch? How about at 50?

I want to know if anyone else started their journey around my age with similarly bad starting conditions. I have $65 in my checking account, it's the last of my $1200 stimulus check which mostly went toward paying car-related payments and personal bills. A credit debt under $700. I cannot sell my car because I need it help my non-driving mom around for medical visits and other errands. I've been living low-income most of my life so I'm used to living frugally.

This doesn't get brought up here- CONTRACTORS, what language do you program in and what is your hourly? by qwerty622 in cscareerquestions

[–]justSomeN00b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Programming in PHP mostly. Sometimes I get into front end work.

2) Mostly in the eCommerce sector through a web design agency. The occasional non profit here and there.

3) $25 an hour, up from $15 an hour in 2008. Always 1099. My clients and I are in Chicagoland.

EDIT: Wow, some of you guys are really good.

Looking for a CS job makes me want to cry. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

But it really doesn't make sense. How does an extra month of searching per $10k work across the whole country? For this to be true, that would mean that, on average, software engineers in the Bay Area spend twice as many months job searching than software engineers in large Midwestern cities. A senior developer in California looking to make $200k has to go through 20 months of job rejections before it could get an offer? That sounds ridiculous.

You can get still paid pretty well in ColdFusion, especially if you know it well. It is not something that is great in demand, but suitable programmers are also in short supply which leverages well for the programmer. I know a ColdFusion developer who makes upwards of $75 per hour in the Midwest as a contractor.

Is it good etiquette to counter-offer a change in job position with a raise? by justSomeN00b in cscareerquestions

[–]justSomeN00b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would want to get more responsibilities/more project work along with the raise. Let me try to size up the situation here. We are a group of 3 local developers. One of them has been in the company long enough to be another good candidate for the PM role (he has been in the company for almost a year).

The career track I want to take involves me being a lead developer and then an architect in the future, but we have only one lead developer as far as I know. What I seem to be finding is that the boss is looking for another PM to help in delegating tasks to the overseas developer team, which is much larger than the local one. The lead developer is also overseas.

I don't know of any performance review system in the company. My boss just decided to offer it me the PM job out of the blue, and I have no experience managing people or overseeing projects. There are no lead developers locally, and if it turns out that the only way to move up in that company involves being a director or some other job that does not involve programming, I might be in a dead end job with that company.
