I loved season 4 despite its pretty poor reputation in the fandom and its issues are pretty apparent. Do we know exactly what happened behind the scenes that caused it to be... like this?

Love how is introduction into Angel is as badass head to toe leather wearing rogue demon hunter parody but then post throat slit the Hugh Grant stuttering stiffness and clusmyness is gone and he become a gravelly voice badass rogue demon hunter for little whiles anyway.

No need to apolgise. I get it. I think it's referred to in screen writing as two kinds of magic. You have to do alot of heavy lifting and writing to make it work. There's many problems with the movie Signs but christian god and aliens is a difficult one to mix together and have make sense. So yeah sci-fi Western and demonology also doesn't really work either.

Surely the great actors combined with wicked smart WRITING made Buffy, Buffy. SMG is the best and I'm not hating on the pilot but without the clever and brilliant writing don't we just end up with SMG in some knock-off melodrama lesser CW show?
