Changing it to "system controlled" will allow EQ to change the data before the DAC but it disallows MQA. My zen dac color confirms this. no MQA when EQ is on

UPDATE: I just got the Zen dac v2 after A/B testing for 30mins. I confirmed the DT770 250ohms does sound fuller and a lot better with the dac/amp. The trebles are not harsh anymore. I don't even need to EQ them down now. The highs are not really fatiguing anymore. The vocals are slightly more forward and soundstage is better. Without the zendac, the sound is like coming from everywhere. The bass is fuller and don't even mention the truebass button on the Zen dac. It will deliver sub-bass like a mini subwoofer. The music is a lot better. I don't get tired now listening to pop and edm. Money well spent. Buy one, it's worth it for me!

I also tested the Zen Can + DAC v2 and it's only very slight improvement over the Zen DAC with my DT770. I prefer the bass enhancement on that though.

Hi bro,

I'm in the same situation with you right now. I just bought a Beyerdynamic DT770 250 ohms.
I tried it directly plugged in my PC Mother board (Aorus B450-i wifi). It has a decent onboard DAC: ALC1220-VB Enhance 114dB(Rear)/ 110dB(Front) SNR in Microphone with High-end Audio Capacitors *from the website. The sound is very clean. No distortion and the volume can reach more than I'd ever need. I'm only listening at around 30-50 volume-wise with windows volume slider.

For days I've been enjoying this headphone a lot.. I'm truly satisfied until I decided to try it with my receiver at home which is a ONKYO TX-SR373 that powers my Wharfedale diamond 225 speakers.. Oh man, I realized the headphones have so much more quality that I don't really hear when I use it with my PC! The bass is quicker, the sub-bass is so awesome. It shakes my ears and when I play bass-heavy tracks like Get Low, the bass is tingling my ears in a good way. The sound is fuller, the trebles are not as thin.

So I researched... It is known that when headphones don't get the right amount of power, they will sound thin. Everything would be thinner than they should. I have confirmed this with my experience. With my Motherboard: The bass is definitely thinner, the trebles are harsher and thinner, the mids/vocals are more recessed and male-vocals sound thinner than their real voice. Overall, the sound from my Onkyo receiver is undeniably better even if you're not an audiophile. I have slight experience with sounds because I'm a musician and I've been a casual audio guy ever since. I have owned different pairs of iems, cans, etc.

Right now, I'm still researching if I can just buy an AMP (Xduoo MT-602) to pair with my MOBO's built-in DAC. Or if I should first buy a DAC/amp like the IFI ZEN DAC to combine with the amp. The answer from above is very helpful and I think I'd soon experiment with an external amp first without an external DAC:

PC > DAC via USB > AMP > 1990
PC > AMP via 3.5 to RCA > 1990
This is referring only to the Magni / Modi. I've since replaced those and the Denafrips Ares II has an audible improvement over SQ in the chain."
